The large port of Faw has reached advanced stages of work, as the Ministry of Transport confirmed the completion of the project ahead of schedule due to the accelerated pace of work.
The project attracted a lot of Iraqi manpower about three years before its opening, and those hands work continuously on the machinery and equipment in the port, while the Korean Daewoo company relied on its work with different nationalities only on the technicians it needs.
The Director of Media and Relations at the General Company for Iraqi Ports affiliated with the Ministry of Transport, Anmar Abdel Moneim Al-Safi, says, “Work on the large port of Faw is proceeding faster than planned, as a result of the accelerated pace of work to complete the project, which contributed to bringing forward its completion date ahead of the planned and scheduled date.” .
And he continued: “According to the signed contract, the completion of the project will be at the end of the year 2025, but in a quick way of working and without any delay or obstacles, the project will be completed before its scheduled date by the end of the year 2024.”
Al-Safi added: “The concrete wall of the berths has recently been completed, as well as the preparation of the pillars, which are 157 pillars that have been worked on, and work began quickly in the container yard in order to fully prepare them,” stressing that “all work requirements are running in parallel.”
The media director of the General Company for Iraqi Ports pointed out that “the last five projects that took place are being carried out in parallel in order to complete all the work in one period of time. Likewise, the five sidewalks, their pillars and their concrete wall are close to completion. Upon completion of the construction and completion of the five sidewalks, they will then be ready to receive Various goods coming from the port, that is, all types of goods will be on the five berths, especially those that benefit from the Iraqi dry channel, and it is possible to place its passengers in this port.
Yesterday, Monday, Prime Minister Muhammad Shia'a al-Sudani directed the acceleration of work in implementing the port of Faw and the dry canal project.
And the media office of the Prime Minister stated in a statement that “Al-Sudani chaired a meeting dedicated to following up the progress of the executive works in the Al-Faw Grand Port project, in the presence of the Director General of Ports, the Assistant Director General of Railways, and the Chairman of the Board of Advisors in the Prime Minister’s Office.”
During the meeting, Al-Sudani listened to a “detailed presentation of the overall construction and implementation works, and the percentages of completion in all paragraphs of the project. .
He added, "The meeting reviewed the details of work in the field of linking the port to the national road and railway networks, and providing energy requirements and support services for the port project."
The Prime Minister directed “to accelerate work in all the executive paragraphs of the port, and the dry canal project related to it,” stressing that “the great port of Faw represents a project the size of Iraq and the aspirations of its people in developing the national economy, and it is also a priority in the field of economy and development within the ministerial curriculum that the government adheres to.” ".
In addition, the representative of Basra Governorate, Mustafa Sanad, said in a post that “the real percentage of the completion of the port of Faw in the five projects with the sequence 4,5,6,7,8 did not reach 30%, which is the opposite of the port director’s statement to the media, which he signed himself in 2018.” 2020 and pledged to complete it within three and a half years, according to his statement and that of former Minister Nasser Bandar.
Sanad added, "Projects with sequences 1, 2, and 3 are projects that were signed in 2019 during the era of Minister Abdullah Bahed Laibi and Ports Director Safaa Al-Maliki, and their completion rates are high."
Last November, a delegation from the Ministry of Transport inspected the large Minao Al-Faw project to see the progress of the works in it, and the Minister of Transport, Razzaq Al-Saadawi, said that “the companies implementing the large Al-Faw project continue their work according to the plans established,” noting that “the ministry is following up the progress of these works to complete them as soon as possible.” It is possible that it is one of the strategic projects that will contribute to reviving the economic movement in Iraq.”
He added, "The project goes through (5) stages, the first of which is work on the sidewalks, and the road that connects the port gate with the international highway from Safwan to the capital, Baghdad. As for the third stage, it is working on implementing the container yard to reach the rest of the stages."
Al-Saadawi stressed that "the Al-Faw port project enjoys the interest of the concerned authorities in the central government," stressing "the necessity of approving the budget by the Iraqi parliament to obtain the funds allocated for the project."
