Prices are flaming in the markets..and the government is content with meetings. The misery of the poor is the outcome of the greed of the influential
Baghdad - Ali Shaghati
The influential political blocs before and during the season of forming the current government made many promises to themselves, the most prominent of which was to address the effects of the exchange rate of the dinar against the dollar and to review the price, and it did not take long before those promises were broken, and they distanced themselves from the crises surrounding the people.
And those blocs shocked the heads of citizens by talking about the rise in food prices globally and their impact on commodity prices locally, and soon those allegations were false after the decline in food prices globally, while they continued to rise significantly locally, as a result of the fluctuation of the price of the Iraqi dinar against the dollar, and its arrival to its lowest level Since years.
And last Friday, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) announced that global food prices continued to decline last December, and even fell below the level they were a year ago.
Umm Kazem (a housewife) says, as she is about to enter Sheikh Zayed Hospital, that “crises have haunted us since childhood. We did not have a halal son who looks at us with responsibility.”
And she adds, "I'm tired of pleadings; they live in Al-Sour.. and we have a heartbreak like a piece of bread."
Umm Kazem utters her last words to the reporter of “Tariq al-Shaab” by saying: “It must be released.
Do not count on the government
A member of the Political Bureau of the Social Movement, Muadhel Abdullah, does not count on the current government to take quick measures to control the exchange rates of the dollar and foodstuffs and consumer goods in the local markets.
And Abdullah believes in an interview with “Tariq al-Shaab” that “the economic reality in the country and the collapse it is going through needs a serious stand by economists and stakeholders who are concerned with the interest of the country, not narrow factional interests.”
Regarding the conditions of the toilers, Adnan Al-Saffar, Secretary General of the Federation of Iraqi Trade Unions, says, "Workers who have contracts and daily wages suffer greatly, as a result of the exaggerated rise in the prices of materials in the local markets."
In an interview with “Tariq al-Shaab,” al-Saffar criticizes “the government’s measures because they do not take into account the economic situation of the most affected societal groups, which leads to an increase in the level of poverty in the country, especially since, according to the Ministry of Planning, 25 percent of citizens are below the poverty line.” Indicating that the minimum wages in the private sector are 350,000 dinars per month, yet there are those who earn less than 200,000 dinars per month, and you can imagine how these people can meet their basic food needs!
urgent solutions
And at the beginning of last year, the former Minister of Planning and the current Minister of Industry, Khaled Battal Al-Najm, revealed that “the repercussions of the (Corona) virus caused the addition of 1.4 million new Iraqis to the total number of the poor, and that the number of the poor, according to this increase, reached 11 million and 400 thousand individuals, After the crisis was about 10 million people, and the poverty rate rose to 31.7 percent, which was 20 percent in 2018.
And the Iraqi Medical Association, the Basra branch, entered the crisis line after calling for 4 urgent solutions to be taken in the face of the collapse of the value of the Iraqi dinar and the decline in the value of the citizen’s income by 32 percent as a result of the rise in the dollar, indicating that “the inflation that occurred in the prices of imported goods in dollars at the beginning of this year has reached to 10 percent compared to 2021. When compared to 2019, the inflation in imported goods in dollars amounted to 32 percent.
In a statement read by “People’s Way,” the union considered that the earners and workers are the first affected by the situation, in addition to their damage as a result of the economic recession and the delay in economic activity by capital, investors and contractors.
The union called on the government to “release the basic materials in the ration card, and amend the current salary scale with an increase of no less than 25 percent of the employee’s total salary, in addition to disbursing the sums of the cost of living allowance for families covered by social security and protection, retirees and families covered by the ration card,” stressing “ The need to impose the pricing of medicines and medical supplies in Iraqi dinars, and for the government to bear the difference in the exchange rate changes instead of charging the citizen with additional costs.
Economic flop
And in light of the continuous rise in the price of the dollar against the Iraqi dinar, and the central bank’s inability to control the matter, financial and economic expert Safwan Qusay says that the country suffers from great economic confusion in terms of introducing goods through informal ways, evading paying taxes and dealing in imports with unreliable countries. And it has a set of international sanctions, which made the international financial community put Iraq on the list of non-transparency to obtain and deal with the dollar.
And he added to “Tariq al-Shaab” that “the Financial Supervision Bureau is concerned with tightening control over the implementation of the government decision that allowed ministries to import, in order not to go to government purchase contracts for the corrupt and thus impose high local prices on imported materials that are borne by the simple citizen, especially from the low-income groups.” The Central Bank and the Ministry of Finance, along with the Office of Financial Supervision, in addition to the Ministry of Commerce, have the responsibility to monitor market prices and control the fluctuation of the dollar exchange rate.
Qusai stresses that the government should expedite taking urgent measures to control the financial reality in the country, and to strengthen the supervisory and executive side, stressing the need for the Ministry of Commerce to strengthen the ration card items by increasing and improving its quality.
