The Ministry of Water Resources sounded the water alarm in the next season, expecting that the current year will be difficult regarding the water situation, while calls escalated from specialists to follow two paths. An external one is represented by negotiating strongly and firmly with neighboring countries to obtain a fair share of water for Iraq, and another internal one is represented by rationalizing consumption, adopting modern irrigation methods, and removing excesses on rivers.
The Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Diab, said in a previous statement to (INA): "The ministry, after May, will face great challenges represented by the high temperatures and the resulting evaporation of water, in addition to the citizens' need for consumption," warning that "this year will be difficult." And there are challenges, the most important of which is how to distribute this small amount of water fairly.”
A member of the Parliamentary Agriculture Committee, Ibtisam al-Hilali, criticized what she described as "exposing water policy to the media," calling for negotiations with neighboring countries on the basis of economic strength. Al-Hilali told Al-Sabah: "It is not supposed to announce statements about the water situation that raise the concerns of citizens, as the state must provide water in one way or another," and called for "Turkey to release the sufficient share for Iraq," describing this file as "political."
And she continued, "We called on the Ministry of Finance to support the provision of modern sprinklers and technologies to reduce water waste in agriculture, and we also called on the Ministry of Water Resources to draw up a rational water policy, and we called on the government to take a firm stand to obtain Iraq's water rights through economic and social pressure."
The Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Diab, announced that his ministry had taken measures to confront the crisis, including the removal of excesses on unauthorized river and lake basins.
For his part, the water expert, Ramadan Hamza, called for negotiations with strong papers such as economy and trade to obtain Iraq's water rights, in addition to benefiting from wastewater in agriculture.
Hamza told Al-Sabah: "We are on the verge of a summer season and an agricultural season, while neighboring countries have set up projects that prevented water from reaching Iraq, as Turkey built dams, while Iran diverted seasonal and permanent rivers into its borders under the pretext of drought." He added, "No The drought problems of these two countries can be projected onto Iraq, and Iraq must have strong cards such as oil and trade," calling for "exploiting their difficult economic situation (Turkey and Iran) in negotiation."
The water expert called for "taking advantage of wastewater in agriculture after treatment, preventing abuses, starting rainwater storage, constructing water harvesting dams, and protecting rivers from medical pollutants," stressing the importance of "water governance, in addition to the internal and external approach to solve this problem." Otherwise, we will face a scarcity of drinking water, especially in Baghdad."
