The Ministry of Agriculture is implementing promising strategic projects to combat desertification within the governorates affected by it, and by adopting the latest international applications and experiences, revealing the allocation of funds within the budget for the next three years to enhance its current and future projects.
The Director of the Department of Forestry and Combating Desertification in the Ministry, Dr. Rawia Mizal Mahmoud, said in an interview with "Al-Sabah": Combating desertification and stopping the encroachment of sand dunes in the country received great attention from the efforts of the current government, which allocated, for the first time, sums of money within the current three budgets, for projects to combat Desertification and climate change being a regional and transboundary problem.
And she showed that Iraq was afflicted with the phenomenon of encroaching sand dunes, which covered four million dunums of land in several governorates, noting that they cause destruction annually by encroaching on agricultural projects and irrigation and drainage networks serving them in various governorates of the country, as well as various roads, especially the main ones, and the causes that this causes. traffic accidents.
Mizal noted that her department has several projects to install moving sand dunes within the desert areas in central and southern Iraq, using mechanical methods by covering the dunes with a 60 cm thick mud layer using bulldozers, in addition to biological methods, and within the governorates of Dhi Qar, Diwaniyah, Maysan, Muthanna and Salah al-Din.
Regarding the projects implemented by her department to combat desertification in the country, she revealed her success during the past years by exploiting 800 thousand dunums of them to establish 100 desert oasis, which contributed significantly to reducing the rate of dust storms and dust in the country, and she also implemented rainwater harvesting techniques by establishing small dams. Spreading smart farming methods to adapt to climate change, and encouraging the cultivation of olive, almond, palm and pistachio trees

In the same context, she revealed the completion of a number of projects during the past period, such as a plant for producing organic fertilizers from agricultural waste and reed plants, which is used to improve desert soil and is the first of its kind, as well as the use of solar energy in irrigation works with regulated systems, confirming its contribution to the stability of the nomads. The department also owns desert nurseries in each governorate, to implement afforestation campaigns in the spring and autumn seasons to enhance the green area in the regions.
