Iranian Minister of Economy, Ehsan Khanduzi, said today, Thursday, that the Iraqi government has not yet secured the $10 billion that it "promised" to provide to the Iranian authorities from the money it owes for gas.
Khanduzi said, in a statement reported by the Iranian Tasnim Agency and translated by (Baghdad Today), that “the Central Bank of Iraq does not now keep the ten billion dollars allocated to Iran,” explaining that “the Iraqi government has deposited the largest part of the sums it owes to Iran in Iranian accounts in the bank.” Iraqi commercial currency, but in the local Iraqi currency, the dinar.
And he continued, "The Iraqi government, in order to secure the ten billion dollars, will need permission from Washington to exchange the amount deposited in the Iranian account from the Iraqi dinar to the US dollar," stressing that "the United States indicated its agreement to grant the required amount to Iran in dollars in exchange for securing the gas necessary for the work of Iraqi power stations.
Khanduzi indicated that "the money in dollars will be deposited from the Central Bank of Iraq in the Commercial Bank of Iraq to be used to pay the prices of what is imported from Iran," according to his description.
