Shafaq News/ Iraq revived, on Saturday, the annual conference of the "Islamic Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women" in its 15th edition, in an official ceremony attended by the four presidents, the UN envoy, and a crowd of representatives of Arab and foreign missions in Baghdad, amid emphasis on the importance of women's role in building society and preserving On its cohesion, and calls for action to secure women's rights.
During his participation in the celebration, Prime Minister Muhammad al-Sudani announced: "We launched a campaign (16) days to combat violence against women, which takes multiple forms related to physical, psychological and spiritual violence by coercing and depriving them of their right to education, or preventing them from possessing leadership in administrative positions." or make them prey to poverty and need.”
16 days campaign
The 16-day campaign will be launched on (November 25, 2023), which coincides with (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women), and this campaign will end on (December 10, 2023), which coincides with International Human Rights Day, according to university professor Dr. Bushra Al-Obeidi, stating that "the aim of this period is to alert that the elimination of violence against women achieves and promotes the goals of human rights in the world."
Al-Obaidi explained, during her interview with Shafaq News agency, that "a period of (16) days is to intensify activities in it, in order to strengthen any procedure, work or legislation that contributes to eliminating violence against women," adding, "But they are just dreams, because every year we hope that This year is better than the last, but it turns out to be worse than the last."
She points out that "Sayyid al-Hakim's initiative to allocate the first of zero for the (Islamic Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) is to warn that the Islamic religion denounces violence against women, since some rely on erroneous interpretations of some Quranic verses to justify violence against them."
According to government statistics, 86 percent of violence against women is domestic, followed by economic violence. Al-Obeidi explains this by saying: “Whoever seizes her salary or private money, deprives her, or forces her to give up her inheritance, it is violence, or she does not have a financial source, which is in itself Violence too, because she will accept humiliation because she has no other source of livelihood.
increased violence
Violence against women is characterized by an international nature, and it is not limited to Iraqi women only, but perhaps the general conditions in the country contributed to its increase, according to the coordinator of the Iraqi Women’s Network, Amal Kabashi, and stresses that “the continuation of conflicts and armed conflicts in light of the social norms and traditions that entrench the concepts of violence within The family and society contributed to the high number of cases.
Kabbashi added, during her interview with Shafaq News Agency, "The government has put in place a number of policies and programs to combat violence against women, but in addition to that, it needs a legal framework that contributes to punishing perpetrators of violence within the family to reduce it and prevent its recurrence, which confirms the need to develop a comprehensive national vision to reduce violence." of violence against women.”
Legal legislation
For her part, the civil activist in the field of women's and children's rights, Suhaila Al-Aasam, attributes the spread of violence against women to the lack of a law against domestic violence, in addition to the customs and traditions entrenched in society, which Bushra Al-Obeidi and Amal Kabashi spoke about.
During her interview with Shafaq News Agency, Al-Aasam agrees with feminist activists on the need to legislate a law on protection from domestic violence that is obstructed by religious parties that prevent even discussion of it, due to the masculine mentality and the lack of understanding of violence against women and its health, economic and social effects on women and the development of society in general. As they say.
