    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Wednesday (September 6, 2023), the expert in water affairs, Adel Al-Mukhtar, confirmed that modern irrigation techniques can solve part of the drought crisis in Iraq, in conjunction with the government's approach to activate and "impose" them on farmers.
Al-Mukhtar told "Baghdad Today" that "relying on modern irrigation techniques is important for Iraq because it is facing a serious and major drought crisis," considering that "this matter is a large part of the solution to the crisis, as it greatly reduces water waste." .
He added, "The participation of the private sector in providing modern irrigation techniques is a good thing, but there must be governmental steps that impose the use of modern irrigation techniques on farmers, so that there is no waste of water," stressing that "modern irrigation techniques are capable of saving and developing the agricultural reality in the country." .
Agriculture consumes more than 80% of the total water uses in Iraq, while the Ministry of Agriculture confirmed earlier that if modern irrigation techniques are used, Iraq will be able to suffice with only 30% of the water coming from Turkey.
It is hoped that the Iraqi state, during the next summer agricultural season, will deprive farmers who do not use modern irrigation techniques of government support, as Al-Sudani has previously confirmed that the next agricultural season will not have any support for any farmer who does not use modern agricultural techniques and modern irrigation methods by sprinklers, and this Part of the agricultural sector reform policy.
Earlier, the Iraqi Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Dhiab Abdullah, revealed that his country is going through "the most difficult stages of drought," which prompted the government to limit agriculture in the current season, stressing that unremitting and exceptional efforts are being made to secure drinking water and that intended for domestic, industrial and health needs. And environmental, in addition to the shares of the marshes and the improvement of the environment of the rivers.
