[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Member of the Parliamentary Services Committee, MP Baqir Al-Saadi, today, Thursday (September 7, 2023), revealed the strategy of the government of Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani to support segments below the poverty line and eliminate the slum file.
Al-Saadi said in an interview, “The poverty rate in the country is high, and the bulk of them live in slums spread around the main cities, including Baghdad.”
He added, “The Sudanese government is aware of the danger of slums, most of which lack basic services, in addition to the fact that poverty is a fertile environment for many societal problems that have security implications in the first place,” noting that “it requires starting seriously to prepare a strategy that provides suitable housing for them by building Low-cost homes that will be unveiled soon.”
He pointed out that “slums cannot be removed without alternatives for the poor and the simple,” stressing that “most of the investments being offered in housing currently are for well-off segments that segments below the poverty line cannot apply for.”
He continued, “The informal settlements law, which is awaiting its arrival from the government, will set broad guidelines for ending a complex file in Iraq with government support by opening the doors to investment in low-cost units.”
Iraq includes more than 4,670 informal settlements inhabited by more than 3 million and 725 thousand Iraqis, meaning approximately 10% of Iraqis live in slums.
