Erdogan: The Emirati president firmly embraces the Iraqi “development road” project and calls for accelerating its completion

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed that UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan firmly embraces the Iraqi “development road” project, and proposed that it be completed on paper as quickly as possible.
Erdogan said during his answer to journalists’ questions after concluding a visit to the Azerbaijani region of Nakhichevan yesterday, Monday, that the “development path” is a project that includes Turkey, Iraq, and all Gulf states, according to what the Turkish “Anatolia” agency reported.
He pointed out that his Emirati counterpart, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, adopts a “very firm position” regarding the project, which includes the land and railway road extending from Iraq to Turkey and its ports.
He explained that the President of the Emirates proposed during their last meeting to complete the preparations related to completing the project on paper within 60 days.
The Turkish President stated that the United States, Japan, India, and China have their own approaches to the “Development Road Project.”
Erdogan pointed to Turkey's role, which he described as important in the project, which constitutes a link from Iraq to Europe, passing through Turkey.
He stressed that the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure immediately began holding the necessary discussions with its concerned contacts, in a step aimed at starting the implementation of the project on the ground.
Erdogan also spoke about the attempt by some to stir up strife, stressing that Turkey would focus, instead of disagreements, on steps that would contribute to finding solutions.
He stated that the “Development Road” project will be the first step in “the ray of development that will eliminate the pockets of darkness endemic in the region,” stressing that “Turkey stands at the heart of this project, the conclusion of which I hope will be good.”
What is the “Development Road” project?
The project starts from Basra Governorate in the far south of Iraq and passes through ten Iraqi governorates all the way to Turkey and from there to Europe.
Among its advantages is linking the trade of the East with the West, while annual profits will reach approximately $4 billion, in addition to providing 100,000 job opportunities.
From a specific point in the large port of Al-Faw, the multimodal (dual-use) development route begins with highways through which cargo trucks pass, and railways for transporting goods and passengers.
Through it, Iraq will turn into a major trade station and a major transportation station between Asia and Europe, and the sea journey time will decrease from 33 to 15 days.
The cost of the project amounts to 17 billion dollars, 10 of which is to purchase high-speed electric trains that transport loads within 16 hours, while the remainder will be spent on extending the railway network to a length of 1,200 km.
According to the Iraqi Ministry of Transport, the project will be completed by 2028, and its completion rate has currently reached 40% from its starting point in the Grand Al-Faw Port.
The maximum capacity of the Al-Faw Grand Port is about 3.5 million equivalent units according to the assumed horizon in 2028, while it will reach about 7.5 million equivalent units according to the assumed horizon in 2038.
The “Development Road” and “Dry Canal” project is not only for Iraq and Turkey, but for the world and the region. It connects the East to the West and is the global corridor for transporting goods.
There will be a railway line, land transport lines, the Grand Al-Faw Port, which is the largest port in the Middle East, and the Energy Industrial City, which will be one of the largest industrial cities in the Middle East.
Lieutenant General Osama Rabie, head of the Egyptian Suez Canal Authority, had confirmed that there is no alternative to the canal, referring to the wave of alternative routes to the canal. Regarding the corridor of the Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Israel, he said: “The other road that passes through more than one country, including the Emirates and Saudi Arabia, all the way to Israel, part of it is sea and the other is railway.” Iron, and this makes it committed to a specific load, and the train will not be able to transport huge containers, as is the case with ships passing through the Suez Canal, and the dangers of transporting the load from the boat to the railway are high, the cost is high, and there is disruption, so it will not be an alternative to the Suez Canal.”
