{Politics: Al-Furat News} Today, Tuesday, the House of Representatives begins the first reading of the proposed law amending the Independent High Electoral Commission Law No. (31) of 2019, the approval of which has become important at this stage due to the end of the mandate of the Board of Commissioners on the eighth of January of the year. Next, two weeks after the provincial council elections.
Representative Sherif Suleiman said, in a press statement, that “Parliament’s legislative recess began in accordance with the constitution, which gave the council the power to extend the legislative term for a month in the event that there are important laws that require legislation,” noting that the tenth day of this month is the first day of the recess, and any session held will be Exceptionally necessary.
Suleiman added that the Commission Law was supposed to be introduced to extend the work of the Council of Commissioners, which ends on the seventh of January next year, indicating that the remaining period between the local elections and the life of the Council will not be sufficient to decide on appeals and address complaints, as well as other matters related to the elections.
He pointed out that the parliamentary elections for the Kurdistan region will be in February of next year and will be supervised by the Commission itself. Therefore, we believe that there is a need to extend the work of the Board of Commissioners if there is no other decision, explaining that extending the work of the Commissioners has become necessary because everyone knows the difficulty of ending the issue of local elections in three. Weeks due to the periods required to process complaints, appeals, etc., adding that any legal legislation requires three sessions of first and second reading and voting.
