The official government spokesman, Bassem Al-Awadi, confirmed today, Thursday, Iraq’s support for the position of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, regarding the blatant violations taking place in Gaza.
Al-Awadi said, in a statement received by Mawazine News: “The Iraqi government expresses its support for the position of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, regarding the blatant violations occurring in Gaza, and his activation of Article 99 of the United Nations Charter, which gives the Secretary-General the authority to (draw the attention of... The Security Council refers to any matter that it deems may threaten the maintenance of international peace and security.”
He added, "The government praised what Guterres indicated that what has been happening in Gaza, for several weeks, represents a threat to international peace and security," pointing out that "Iraq confirms that the disasters that occurred as a result of this aggression have led to a humanitarian tragedy that requires intervention." Internationally urgently to stop it, and we have alerted, from the first day of the aggression in Gaza, to the necessity of uniting all responsible international efforts, in order to prevent events from sliding into undesirable consequences, and that the consequences of the aggression, carried out by the forces of the usurping entity, have caused thousands of victims. He continued, "Iraq has repeatedly stressed that it is not fair to equate the victim with the killer, and that what has been happening since October 7 is inseparable from the accumulations of oppression, usurpation of rights, and ongoing violations in the Palestinian territories."
