    Al-Sumaria News - Exclusive:

Various Iranian bodies, whether economic or media, issue statistics from time to time about the volume of exports to Iraq, and statements often come that exports to Iraq rose to a “record number” or that they were higher than the previous year, while Al-Sumaria reviews News conducted a digital analysis of the latest announced figures, which make the latest Iranian statements about rising exports to Iraq questionable.

While these statements are not surprising in a normal situation, the Iranian side’s announcement of an increase in the volume of exports to Iraq during the past 9 months, starting from the beginning of the Iranian year in March 2023 until December 2023, increasing by more than 30% compared to the same period of the year 2022, is considered... This is surprising, if it is matched with the crisis of the dollar and trade financing with Iran that Iraq witnessed throughout the past year.

In this report, Al-Sumaria News reviews several indicators and reasons that make the Iranian statement “questionable.” In the first place, Iraqi merchants began not to find financing in dollars from the Central Bank to import goods from Iran, and they were often forced to buy it from the parallel market at higher prices, which made Iranian goods It loses its ability to compete with other goods in Iraq due to its high cost.

*Iraqi imports decreased by 23% in 2023.

World Trade Organization data indicate that Iraq imported in the first 9 months of last year 2023 at a value of about 28 billion dollars, which is a decrease of 23% compared to the same period of the previous year in 2022, in which Iraq’s imports amounted to About 36 billion dollars.
This indicates that Iraq’s imports, especially from Iran, must have decreased, due to the dollar crisis, and what global trade data indicates is a decrease in Iraq’s imports in 2023.

*The Iranian export rate to Iraq decreased by 10%

. In another indicator, the Iranian side says that exports Iran to Iraq during 9 months (from March to December) amounted to 6.9 billion dollars, considering that it was 33% higher than the same period of the previous year in 2022.

However, digital analysis shows that the average monthly export from Iran to Iraq amounts to 766 billion dollars, This compares to $850 million per month in the year 2022, in which Iran’s exports to Iraq during the year amounted to more than $10.2 billion.

This indicates that Iraq’s imports from Iran, as a monthly average, decreased by 10% compared to the monthly average in 2022, and it is a third indicator that makes the Iranian statement and figures about “Iran’s exports to Iraq increasing by 30%” figures of questionable authenticity.
