    Iraq fell 4 places in the Democracy Index for 2023 issued by the Economist Intelligence Observatory, while the report shows that the Democracy Index fell to its lowest level since its launch in 2006.

    The index report, which was released yesterday, Thursday, for the year 2023, showed that the year was an ominous year for democracy, as the average global score fell to its lowest level since the beginning of the index in 2006.

    Iraq ranked 128th globally out of 165 countries in the democracy index, and Iraq’s decline shows 4 Rankings compared to the previous year, where Iraq obtained a score of 2.88 points, which places it within the red zone that is described as being under “authoritarian rule.”



    The report says that less than 8% of the world's population lives under a full democracy, while nearly 40% lives under authoritarian rule - a percentage that is no less than 10%, and may creep up in recent years.

    The world's democracies appear powerless to prevent the outbreak of wars around the world, and the Economist Intelligence Unit's Democracy Index report analyzes the relationship between democracy, war and peace and looks at the geopolitical drivers of conflict.
