The Ministry of Commerce launched a campaign to sell food at competitive, subsidized prices coinciding with the approaching month of Ramadan, while stressing the work through food baskets distributed to citizens to achieve food security and prevent a rise in prices during Ramadan.
The Director General of the Ministry’s Planning and Follow-up Department, Talib Hassan Nimah, said in a statement to “Al-Sabah”: His ministry launched a campaign to sell table eggs at a price of five thousand dinars, and meat at a price of nine thousand dinars per kilogram, and within the areas of the Karkh and Rusafa sides through 13 mobile vehicles in addition to locations. The ministry and marketing outlets will continue until the holy month.
He stressed that the food baskets, of which the Ministry distributed ten within one year, work to achieve food security, as they prevented a rise in the prices of basic materials even in the month of Ramadan, specifying the number of beneficiaries from them at 41 million and 553 thousand citizens, while the number of those withheld reached 41 million and 553 thousand citizens after activating the electronic card. 600 thousand.
In the same context, Nehme revealed that more than seven million citizens have been included in the basket designated for those registered in the social welfare system, which consists of 11 items, of which the ministry has distributed among them so far, 12 within one year, stressing that his ministry imports rice from American, Thai, and Argentinian origins.
Regarding monitoring food prices in Baghdad and the governorates, he explained that the Commercial Control Department, in coordination with the Organized Crime Directorate, organized campaigns to monitor them, coinciding with the Ministry’s pumping of large quantities of food to local markets, including table eggs, chicken, yellow flour, and milk, due to the approaching month of Ramadan, stressing that Iraq had not included Within the global statistics of countries suffering from high
food prices.
He pointed out that during next April, seven central markets will be opened in Baghdad as large marketing complexes according to modern and advanced systems and programs under the title (Cooperation), and foodstuffs and various goods will be sold at prices 20 percent lower than their counterparts in local markets, revealing that his ministry will begin establishing the Rusafa and Jamila marketing centers. Which will be opened during the holy month of Ramadan.
