Selling abandoned numbers causes problems for mobile subscribers

In the era of digitization, a person’s phone number turns into an identity and a basic point of contact close to him, but what happens if another person “occupies or buys” this “identity”? Here, citizens complain about problems and difficult social situations due to the increasing phenomenon of “selling abandoned numbers” from... Before mobile phone companies, while the Media and Communications Authority justifies the matter as “purely commercial” that protects companies from huge losses. Citizen Mushtaq Talib said that he lost his father in 2007, and was unable to retrieve any of his documents or personal belongings that he was carrying, including his mobile phone.
A student explained during his talk to “Al-Sabah” that he was surprised after years of receiving a call from his father’s number, which surprised the family and put it in a state of shock, adding that “his family called back more than once on this number, and sent many introductory messages more than once.” And there is no one to answer.”
The citizen said: “The family remained confused for days until they learned that the company had re-offered the number to another person, after a long period of time had passed since it had not been used or activated.”
As for the citizen Muhammad Ali, he had another story in which he confirmed that he called the number of a person he knew and had not communicated with for years, only for a person to appear on the other end who assured him that he was not the wanted person. Ali returned to confirm to Al-Sabah that he “confirmed the number and called it back, only for the same person to appear as the first person to curse and insult him because of repeatedly calling the wrong person.”
The citizen added that he was shocked to learn about the mechanism for selling the neglected and abandoned number in the markets, which, according to the citizens, is a widespread phenomenon among subscribers.
Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Media and Communications Authority, Bassam Salem, told Al-Sabah: “Mobile phone companies selling abandoned numbers is a practice in all countries of the world.”
Salem explained, “Companies sell lines a year after subscribers abandon them, because the subscriber pays a subscription for this line, and if he does not pay it, it can be withdrawn and sold to another person.”
The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Media Authority added, “This matter is applicable not only in Iraq, but in all countries of the world,” pointing out that “the companies pay annual sums for these lines, whether they are operational or not, and therefore it is not possible not to reinvest them if they are operational.” A period of time passes without using it.
According to Salem, “companies may bear significant losses if the range of their devices expands if they contain unused lines.”
