{Political: Al-Furat News} Zainab Al-Moussawi, a member of the Parliamentary Oil and Gas Committee, called for the need to increase solar energy projects.
Al-Moussawi told {Al-Furat News} agency, “With the continuing electricity crisis in Iraq due to the lack of imports of Iranian gas, in addition to the increased load on national energy, there is also a significant rise in temperatures, which begin during the summer every year and exceed 50 degrees Celsius, which causes pressure on loads.” "It is necessary to move toward exploiting solar energy, given that Iraq is one of the countries most exposed to the sun in the Middle East and Asia."
She added, "There is an absence of a culture about the importance of solar energy, despite there being an upward trend, with the presence of public and private sector companies installing solar energy system stations, at prices starting from $4,500, and may reach $6,000 at a time when Iraq is suffering from a severe shortage of electrical energy, and the matter is increasing." It gets worse in summer, with temperatures rising to 50 degrees Celsius, as electrical power stations produce only 24,000 megawatts, while the country’s need reaches 32,000 megawatts.
She indicated that "projects in exploiting solar energy can play a major role in reducing polluting emissions released by electrical stations, and that exploiting solar energy in general requires government plans and strategies in parallel with relative security stability to attract investments, assuming that the energy sector is profitable, as the idea is It began early in the 1980s, but the international blockade after 1991 and the occupation in 2003 postponed development plans.”
