The Parliamentary Civil Society Organizations Committee confirmed today, Sunday (June 16, 2024), that political interventions have greatly affected the work of unions and organizations in Iraq, noting that “political and sectarian quotas” also affected unions.
Committee member Amir Al-Mamouri told “Baghdad Today” that “without any doubt, political and partisan interventions have negatively affected the work of unions and various organizations in Iraq, especially since some influential parties want to make those unions and organizations share shares through political quotas.” And sectarianism.”
Al-Mamouri stated that “political and partisan control over the various unions and organizations will certainly cause them to lose their social standing and reduce their role and importance in society, as they will be among the tools of power. Therefore, any political and partisan interference in the work of any of the unions and organizations must be excluded and their independence must be preserved.”
Independent unions have an important role in all countries, as well as in different eras of Iraq’s history, on the political level, protest activity, opinion-making, and popular positions, which made the authorities and political forces put their hand in the structure of these unions and federations because of the threat they pose to political hegemony.
