The committee in charge of the “Baghdad Metro” is scheduled to hold a meeting, today, Sunday, with investors to determine the final formula for the winner of the strategic project.
Nasser Al-Asadi, advisor to the Prime Minister for Transport Affairs, said in an interview with Al-Sabah: The meeting will include an advanced stage of inquiries, on the basis of which we will begin to determine who is the investor who will be responsible for establishing the project, the period in which it will be completed, and other details.
He pointed out that the committee in charge of the "Baghdad Metro" project will discuss, after the completion of the meeting, the operation of this project, and the specific duration and method for doing so.
He explained that several previously proposed projects were collected in the "Baghdad Metro" project, which will cover an area of 85 percent of the capital, noting that the length of the project is 148 km distributed between 64 stations, including 8 stations for moving between tracks, and 4 crossings that will be between Karkh and Rusafa.
He added that the path will cover all places in Baghdad, including tourist areas and universities, as well as religious shrines, shopping centers, government ministries, relevant departments, hospitals, and all events located within the capital, Baghdad.
He pointed out that there is a path that connects to Baghdad International Airport, linked to four of the eight paths, so that the traveler’s transportation process from any area in Baghdad to the airport is easy and smooth.
Al-Asadi continued that the number of passengers on the Baghdad Metro is estimated at 5 million passengers daily, and this percentage is very large, as it is known that the percentage of passengers on trains does not exceed 20 percent of the city’s population, but the way the Baghdad metro is planned will cover an area greater than this.
Regarding the specifications of the metro train, Al-Asadi explained that the train will be of international standards without a driver, and will take the main streets in Baghdad, and the stations will be in the middle of the road, in addition to a bridge covering both sides of the road.
He pointed out that one train consists of six carriages, each of which can accommodate 150 passengers, and includes three classes, the first of which is gold, which will have a comfortable space for the passenger, a carriage designated for women, infants, newborn children, and young people, which has a high level of privacy, and another class for regular class passengers. In addition to seats designated for people with special needs.
