Member of the Parliamentary Agriculture Committee, MP Thaer Al-Jubouri, revealed today, Wednesday (July 17, 2024), a movement to return the powers of the agricultural departments in the governorates to the capital, Baghdad.
Al-Jubouri said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "After an objective evaluation of the performance of the agricultural departments in the governorates after the transfer of the ministry's powers to them, many negatives appeared, including the emergence of violations and corruption and their causing multi-faceted damage to a sector that represents a window for employing nearly 50% of the workforce in the country."
He added, "The file of returning the powers of the agricultural departments in the governorates to the ministry in Baghdad was discussed in a direct meeting with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani some time ago, despite our belief that corruption exists in any institution, but re-managing the agriculture file by the ministry will be less harmful than what is currently happening, according to what we see."
Al-Jubouri pointed out that "two to three important laws related to the agricultural sector will be reviewed in the next legislative session, including investment in light of a new vision that allows investment and development according to objective, uncomplicated provisions that give priority to reclamation and production, while providing support and adopting modern frameworks in agriculture."
It is noteworthy that the powers of the Ministry of Agriculture are distributed between the Ministry itself and the provincial council in the sub-committees.
