    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
MP Hussein Habib confirmed today, Friday (July 19, 2024), that Iraq needs 3 million housing units to end the housing crisis in the country, while describing the residential complexes as not solving the crisis, at a time when Baghdad is the governorate with the largest housing deficit, with it containing a number of people equivalent to 3 times its capacity.
Habib said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "Iraq has reached the peak of the housing crisis, which is the result of accumulations and mistakes that all previous governments have borne the burden of," noting that "Baghdad, for example, had a population of more than 3 million people in 2003, and now it has exceeded 10 million people, so where are the complex projects and the large sums of money that were spent?"
He added, "Even the housing investment projects are allocated to the affluent classes to the extent that even an employee with a salary of two million dinars is not able to obtain a housing unit due to the exaggeration in prices, which is met by a state of extreme poverty experienced by large segments."
He pointed out that "the country needs 3 million housing units to end this crisis, which has negative dimensions in 6 main points, most notably the pressure on services and the high increase in population density, not to mention the problems of human overcrowding and the lack of openness towards new cities."
He added, "The slums have become a reality imposed by many circumstances and must be addressed according to laws that focus on ensuring the existence of homes that are suitable for the citizen and provide him with basic services because it is an entitlement as stated in Article 30 of the Constitution."
The Iraqi government announced the abandonment of the idea of "residential complexes" and the move towards new residential cities, and offered 5 cities for investment that are expected to provide 250 thousand housing units, in addition to 10 additional cities that are expected to be offered, so that the total provided by these cities will be approximately one million housing units throughout Iraq.
The housing deficit in Baghdad alone amounts to nearly one million housing units, which means that more than 30% of the housing deficit in all of Iraq is located in Baghdad alone, according to figures and data from the Ministry of Construction and Housing.
