Economist explains the reasons behind Iraq's burning of gas and confirms: It is enough to supply 3 million homes with electricity

Economic researcher Ali Karim Idhaib explained the reasons for burning gas, while stressing that the amount of gas burned in Iraqi airspace is enough to supply 3 million homes with electricity.
Idhaib said, “Iraq’s need for electricity produced by gas is constantly increasing, as the demand for electricity is estimated today at about 36 thousand megawatts, while the demand is expected to rise to about 70 thousand megawatts in 2050.” He pointed out that “there are many reasons that push Iraq to burn natural gas, as the gas sector is very complex and requires modern technology with a very high cost.” He stressed that “the amount of gas that Iraq burns daily is enough to supply no less than 3 million homes with electricity, which Iraqis have been suffering from a shortage of for years.”
Idhaib added that “Iraq has gas reserves estimated at 131 trillion cubic feet, ranking 11th globally, but the weakness of the infrastructure has reduced the daily production capacity by half, to record about 1.5 billion cubic feet of associated gas.”
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced last May that gas flaring would stop within 3-5 years, and indicated that the government was establishing a new position for Iraq in the global energy market.
In 2017, Iran began exporting gas to Iraq, under a contract that obligates it to supply an average of 25 million cubic meters per day.
It is worth noting that Iraq relies heavily on imported Iranian gas for about a third of its electricity production, primarily to fuel thermal power plants.
