Haider al-Abadi: Iraq is stable in terms of security under the current government

Head of the Victory Coalition Haider al-Abadi believes that Iraq enjoys great security stability during the current government’s term, which has been reflected in the economic movement. Al-Abadi said in an interview with “Waa”: “The country is witnessing great security stability thanks to the interest in security and the readiness of the Iraqi forces after the military victory over ISIS by liberating Mosul in 2017 and the victories that followed.”
He added that "stability has had a positive impact on the general situation, encouraged investment and moved the wheel of projects," noting that "Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani is not new to responsibility, as he previously held the position of governor, deputy and minister, and this progression made him familiar with the general situation."

Regarding early elections, Al-Abadi explained that “the demand of some forces for early elections is a kind of political bickering,” noting that “holding them is not possible, as the commission has obligations, including the regional parliament elections, as well as its preparations for the upcoming legislative elections, which require time.”
He added that "in every election a new law is enacted, and this is a problem that causes delay and disagreement, until consensus is reached between the political blocs," noting that "previous laws with elections had dates set for them, but this time there is a keenness to make it a fixed law that does not change."
Al-Abadi explained that "in the 2021 elections, the number of lost votes was huge, as 9 million participated and about half of the votes were lost, and this is a flaw that indicates the democratic process," noting that "the current system and amendment are the most appropriate in my opinion, although I had a personal opinion in preferring Saint-Laguë with the formula of 1.5 instead of 1.7 to allow the smaller blocs to rise and cross the threshold."
He expressed his readiness to "work in common spaces with others, and we do not have political intersections with many blocs," stressing that "the reform path must continue."
Al-Abadi stressed that "the position of the Sadrist movement is not clear yet on the issue of returning and participating in the electoral process," adding that "the first impression is that they will participate."
Regarding the reasons for the delay in electing a new parliament speaker, Al-Abadi said: “All components are divided and the only solution is to put the election of the president to a vote in parliament with every session held.” Regarding the visit of the head of the Democratic Party, Masoud Barzani, to Baghdad, Al-Abadi said: “The visit achieved a rapprochement that led to the formation of a committee from the Coordination Framework and the Democratic Party to communicate and prevent the expansion of problems.”
Regarding the international coalition file, Al-Abadi explained that “Iraq absolutely does not need the international coalition, as the circumstances of 2014 are different from the circumstances of this year.”
