Al-Maliki said in an interview with the Twenty program broadcast by Al-Sumaria satellite channel, that he "visited the offices of the religious authorities in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] regarding amending the Personal Status Law," explaining that he "met with the religious authorities and their representatives, including (Sheikh Muhammad Ishaq al-Fayadh, Sheikh Bashir al-Najfi and Sayyid al-Hakim) regarding the Personal Status Law, and that they expressed their approval of amending the law and proceeding with the legislation of this law."

He added, "The religious authority is keen on the principle of the sovereignty of the people and their authority in legislating laws and the constitution," indicating that "the Iraqi people are classified among religious peoples," stressing that "the essence of amending the Personal Status Law is democratic."

Al-Maliki pointed out that "the identity of the state and its current constitution is based on two pillars, Islamic and democratic, and the proposed Personal Status Law did not include any age for marriage," noting that "the marriage of minors was not mentioned in amending the Personal Status Law."

He explained that "jurists believe that puberty is not necessarily considered the age of marriage," indicating that "Mr. Sistani sees the necessity of physical and psychological preparation for marriage."

Al-Maliki stressed that "the code that will be submitted to parliament will determine the age of marriage," indicating that "the current Personal Status Law is deficient."

He concluded that "parties have thwarted the attempt to read the Personal Status Law," stressing that "there are pressures exerted from outside [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] regarding amending the Personal Status Law."
