Informed Iraqi sources revealed, today, Sunday, that US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken conveyed a strongly worded message to Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, from the US administration.
The sources said, "Blinken conveyed to Al-Sudani a strongly worded message from the US administration regarding the intention of the armed factions loyal to Iran to escalate against US forces in Iraq and the region, as he informed the US Secretary of State that the US administration is ready to do anything to protect its forces and interests, and that any escalation by those factions will be responded to harsher than in the past."
She added, "Al-Sudani informed the US Secretary of State that he is working hard to prevent any new escalation in Iraq between the factions and the Americans during the next stage. In return, he requested American guarantees that no new attacks will be repeated against the elements of the Popular Mobilization Authority and the factions included in this authority, in order to maintain control over the calm between the two parties."
According to Al-Sudani's office, the latter received a phone call earlier today, Sunday, from US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, during which they discussed the latest regional and international developments, Iraq's role in supporting international peace and stability, and preventing current events from continuing on a path of escalation.
The US Department of Defense said on Friday that it would deploy additional fighter jets and Navy warships to the region.
“The overall goal is to de-escalate tensions in the region, deter and repel these attacks, and avoid a regional conflict,” Jonathan Finer, deputy national security adviser, told CBS.
According to Feiner, the United States and Israel are preparing for all possibilities.
He said the region had avoided a major escalation in April when Iran launched a drone and missile attack on Israel in response to what it said was an Israeli strike on its consulate in Damascus on April 1, which killed seven Iranian Revolutionary Guardsmen.
Iran has arrested more than 20 people, including senior intelligence officers, military officials and employees of a military-run guesthouse in Tehran, in response to a “huge and humiliating” security breach that enabled Haniyeh’s assassination, according to Iranians familiar with the investigation.
According to a report published by the New York Times, the high-profile arrests came after the killing of Haniyeh, who was visiting Tehran to attend the inauguration of the new Iranian president and was staying at a guest house in northern Tehran.
The Revolutionary Guards' intelligence unit has taken over the investigation and is hunting suspects in hopes of leading them to members of the assassination team that planned, aided and carried out the killing, according to the Iranian officials, who asked not to be identified because of the sensitive nature of the investigation.
