Implementation of the largest water project in Erbil

The Water and Sanitation Directorate in Erbil has begun implementing the largest water project in the province at a cost of $480 million within the regional government budget. Work on it will continue for 550 days. The Director General of the Water and Sanitation Directorate in Erbil, Ari Ahmed, told Al-Sabah: “The engineering and technical staff in his directorate have begun their work on implementing the largest water project in the province in order to solve the water crisis once and for all. Its cost has been set at $480 million and it will continue for 550 days. He noted that completing this project will compensate for the water scarcity and interruption in the summer.
He explained that the project includes two water treatment plants with a capacity of 20,000 cubic meters per hour according to Iraqi specifications and the World Health Organization, noting that it takes water from the Great Zab River and aims to provide potable water and close approximately 1,000 water wells, which will contribute to protecting groundwater and preventing its waste.
It is noteworthy that the local government in Erbil allocated 1.5 billion dinars to solve the problem of water scarcity and interruption.
