Iraqi parliament member, Murtadha Al-Saadi, revealed that there is a movement among parliamentarians to discuss the possibility of parliament canceling the privileges granted by Iraq to Jordan, against the backdrop of its position on the Iranian strike on Israel.
This comes against the backdrop of Iran launching dozens of missiles at Israel on Tuesday evening, October 1, in response to the assassination of the Secretary-General of the Lebanese Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, and a commander in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, while Jordan announced that it had intercepted several Iranian missiles that had entered Jordanian airspace.
In response, Al-Saadi, head of the State Support Alliance, told Rudaw Media Network on Saturday (October 5, 2024), “Parliamentarians are discussing the possibility of canceling the privileges granted by Iraq to Jordan, against the backdrop of its position on the Iranian strike on Israel.”
He pointed out that "until now there are no official decisions regarding the issue, but it is on the table of representatives in the Council."
Iran had attacked Israel with 250 missiles, in response to the latter's assassination of the Secretary-General of the Lebanese Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, targeting military air bases and an intelligence headquarters north of Tel Aviv, within 12 hours.
In turn, the Jordanian Public Security Directorate announced that the Kingdom's air defenses intercepted missiles and drones heading towards Israel, while video clips showed an Iranian missile falling on a road on the outskirts of the capital, Amman.
The statement read, “The Royal Jordanian Air Force and air defense systems responded to a number of missiles and drones that entered Jordanian airspace.”
She pointed out that the Kingdom's intervention was a matter of self-defense and protecting its sovereignty. Government spokesman and Minister of State for Media Affairs, Mohammad al-Momani, said in a statement that "Jordan's position is clear and firm that it will not be an arena for conflict for any party," adding that protecting Jordanians is the Kingdom's "first responsibility."
Iraq supplies Jordan with oil at preferential prices, as part of memoranda of understanding between the two parties that have been in effect for a long time.
This is not the first time that calls have been made to stop the privileges granted by Iraq to Jordan. Last February, an Iraqi parliament member collected signatures to issue a resolution to stop oil exports to Jordan.
