The Ministry of Environment announced today, Thursday, the signing of a $30 million funding to support climate change-resistant agriculture in Iraq.
The Environment stated in a statement received by "Mawazine News" that "through the latest deliberations between the Iraqi technical team headed by the Ministry's Undersecretary Jassim Abdul Aziz Hammadi and the United Nations, which was able to approve and announce the signing of a funding of (30) million US dollars from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to implement the project "Enhancing Climate Resilience for Vulnerable Agricultural Livelihoods" in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)."
Hammadi confirmed, according to the statement, that "this achievement was achieved with the distinguished support of the Prime Minister and based on the directives of the Minister of Environment, Nizar Amedi, through continuous efforts with the Green Climate Fund, which is one of the compensatory mechanisms approved by the Paris Climate Agreement to help countries affected by climate change, including Iraq."
He explained that "the project will focus on promoting sustainable agriculture in the governorates of (Karbala, Najaf, and Muthanna) that are witnessing environmental fragility represented by land degradation, desertification, and shrinking agricultural area."
The Technical Undersecretary of the Ministry of Environment stated that "the signing meeting for the financing was held today via the Internet with the Board of Directors of the Green Climate Fund in Seoul, South Korea, in the presence of representatives of the FAO and the Director General of the Technical Department, Najla Al-Waili, Director of the Climate Change Directorate, Youssef Mu'ayyad, and Director of the Urban Environment Directorate, Muthanna Saloumi," noting that "this financing is one of the largest international projects that aim to enhance the resilience of agricultural communities and prepare to confront the effects of climate change."
He pointed out that "this project embodies Iraq's commitment to implementing the government program in the axes of the environment, climate, and renewable energy," adding that "the Ministry of Environment, through the National Authority for the Green Climate Fund and the Climate Change Directorate, is the coordinating and organizing body for these projects according to internationally approved forms."
Hammadi confirmed that "the ministry continues to prepare additional projects in cooperation with other ministries to submit to the fund, including other Iraqi governorates in addition to the Kurdistan Region, which contributes to reducing emissions and reducing damage resulting from climate change."
He concluded by saying: "We are proud of this distinguished achievement, which represents a bright spot in the record of Iraqi environmental work and places Iraq on the list of priorities for international financing of climate projects."
