Baghdad/Al-Masala: Amidst the rapid changes in the global system, the role of the BRICS group emerges as a potential alternative to the traditional economic and political system that Western countries have dominated for decades.
During the recent BRICS summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke about the importance of strengthening cooperation between the group’s countries in the field of combating terrorism, extremism and cross-border crime, stressing that this cooperation will be an essential part of plans to enhance global stability.
Pointing to BRICS' growing role, he proposed establishing an international criminal court for the group.
Observers describe the proposal as historic, as the court, if established, would represent a symbol of a challenge to Western dominance over international institutions such as the International Court of Justice.
The idea that this court would be directed at crimes targeting countries in the global south raises questions about the credibility of current international justice.
In this context, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro addressed the summit, questioning the absence of international justice in the situations in Gaza and Lebanon, which reinforces the sense of bias in the current global order.
On the other hand, there was talk about the new digital currency “BRICS PAY”, which aims to reduce dependence on the US dollar.
Political analyst Haidar Salman wrote for Al-Masala that this currency, backed by gold and natural resources, could become a real alternative to the dollar, as 159 countries seek to adopt this new system. The analysis goes that this currency is not just a means of payment, but rather a symbol of a comprehensive transformation in the global financial system that has long been dominated by the West.
Salman’s predictions indicated that this trend would reduce the impact of Western sanctions that often target countries opposed to Western economic hegemony. Some observers believe that relying on local currencies in transactions within the BRICS countries would create a new economic balance and contribute to building more just and independent economic relations.
Speaking of economic cooperation, the BRICS countries announced during the summit their intention to establish an integrated industrial and commercial zone in the Suez Canal Economic Zone.
Experts believe that this region could become an economic model comparable to Hong Kong, as the capabilities of the industrial and technological countries in BRICS combine to form a new global economic center.
In this context, UAE President Abdullah bin Zayed stressed at the BRICS Plus conference that multilateralism is not an option, but a necessity, stressing that cooperation between countries of the Global South can be the cornerstone of a more just world order.
As Western countries continue to closely monitor these developments, the fundamental question remains: Can the new order that BRICS seeks to establish, whether through a special criminal court, digital currency or industrial zones, change the rules of the global political and economic game?
