Establishment of environmental monitoring points in the oil areas of Basra

The director of the Environment and Pollution Control Section at the Basra Oil Company, Engineer Fadhil Abdul Kadhim Al Kaabi, told Al-Sabah that the company has completed work on the project to establish three observation points on the rivers in the areas of Muftiyah in Maqal and Ben Omar field north of Basra, South of the city district. He pointed out that each point is a boat equipped with special equipment for the withdrawal of oil stains, in addition to chemical dispersions and use in emergency situations to clear those areas of oil contaminants in the event of future occurrence. Al-Kaabi said that the competent task forces have started their work on environmental control and monitoring at the Muftiya sites Shatt al-Arab section of the stronghold and Nahr bin Omar field near the monastery, as well as the location of the bridge north of Basra. He pointed out to the introduction of a mobile monitoring laboratory containing sensors and analysis of gases and pollutants in the oil and industrial air in the oil areas and residential areas near the fields, which will help environmental and health authorities to maintain the identification of the extent of overriding the environmental determinants and the seriousness of pollutants and their effects in public life, noting that the engineers and technicians in the section Is about to complete the modernization and installation of air pollution control equipment and equipment. Dr. Abdul Amir Salim, the specialist, told Al-Sabah that the most common cases of cancer patients were respiratory organs and stomachs, indicating the high rate of pollutants and toxic substances in the air and water. He stressed that the environmental and scientific researches confirmed the presence of pollutants, radiation and toxic parts from the production, purification, refining and transport of crude oil in the productive areas.
