Maple Leafs vs. Canucks: ‘There’s always a lot of talk and nothing happens. So let’s play the game.’

VANCOUVER — Matt Martin looked fine for someone under a death threat.
But most of the Toronto Maple Leafs players involved in last month’s brouhaha with the Canucks at the Air Canada Centre weren’t expecting a carry-over Saturday night at Rogers Arena. Not with so many people keeping a close eye on any extracurriculars, including the NHL department of player safety, which will have boss Stephane Quintal in the stands according to TSN.
A quick recap of the 6-3 Leaf win on Nov. 5: Nazem Kadri scrambled Daniel Sedin’s eggs with a blindside hit, ugliness ensued, and rugged Leafs winger Matt Martin triggered a bit of brawl when he went after inexperienced Canucks defenceman Troy Stecher. Goalie Ryan Miller jumped in, Leafs counterpart Frederick Andersen came down the ice to join in. Canucks winger Alex Burrows later went after Toronto’s Morgan Rielly, who had delivered an open-ice hit to Jannik Hansen on the same shift that Kadri hit Sedin.
Vancouver defenceman Erik Gudbranson yelled within earshot of the media that Martin “is dead … everyone can hear that now, (bleeping) dead.”

“I’d say both teams got caught up in the emotions of that game,” Martin said Friday after the Leafs practised at the University of British Columbia. “It’s sports, it’s hockey.
“After the games are done, you try to let them go as fast as possible. But people will hype this game up, it’s going to be talked about. It’s going to run its course tomorrow, but we’re focused on winning and making this a successful road trip. Games get emotional sometimes, and that was the most emotional game for us this season. Tomorrow’s a new game.”
Martin, who said Stecher just happened to be the closest dance partner, never heard Gudbranson’s threat.
“I don’t know really worry about what’s said in that regard. He made comments that you guys heard and I didn’t.”

The Canucks, who lost at home to Anaheim on Thursday, re-arranged the time and location of their practice in an apparent attempt to shield their players from reporters. The Leafs made Kadri, Martin and Rielly available. Kadri quipped that he planned to keep a low profile in town during the Leafs’ extended stay.
Kadri escaped supplemental discipline for the Sedin hit, and he said he’s not going to change his push-the-envelope style against the opposition’s best players.

“I just tried to be hard on him and finish my check,” Kadri said. “But by no means do I want to see anybody hurt out there. I know he’s a valuable player to his team and been in the league a number of years, so I respect that. I wouldn’t expect (his angry teammates) to act differently.”
