The injury woes continued for the Montreal Canadiens on Monday as Andrew Shaw (concussion) and Andrei Markov (lower body injury) were absent from practice. At this point, do not expect Shaw to return until after the holiday break at the earliest. However, the fact that the Canadiens called it a “therapy day” for Markov is somewhat encouraging as it certainly could have been worse. There is still the possibility that he will play on Tuesday against the Anaheim Ducks as his status will likely be a gametime decision.

In the meantime, Mark Barberio took Markov’s place on the blue line next to Jeff Petry at practice. At first it seemed odd to leave Nathan Beaulieu on the third pairing while promoting Barberio who has played sparingly this season. However considering that Markov’s injury is not as bad as originally feared, it is understandable to have Beaulieu continue to practice on the third unit. If Markov is ultimately unable to play against the Ducks tomorrow night, the likelihood is that Beaulieu will slide up to play alongside Petry, especially considering their past positive experiences playing together.

Up front Sven Andrighetto rejoined his teammates at practice, alternating with Chris Terry on the right wing of the fourth line:

When Alex Galchenyuk and David Desharnais went down with their knee injuries, Tomas Plekanec became the defacto number one center. For a couple of games he was able to step up and fill that void, playing like the Plekanec of old contributing at both ends of the ice. Unfortunately, it has been a year now since his scoring pace has slowed to a crawl and at 34 years young it is extremely unlikely that he will regain his offensive form. For now it will likely be a rotation by committee of the Canadiens various centers for who gets to play on the top line with Max Pacioretty and Alexander Radulov. Expect the Canadiens to continue to play in tight low scoring affairs until Galchenyuk returns.

Phillip Danault is the most recent to lay claim and so far he has performed well enough to stay there. While many want to rush Michael McCarron and have him moved up in the lineup, it would be a stretch for him to play the big minutes of the first line. He looked good in a couple of power play opportunities on the top unit and that would be a better way to take advantage of his big frame. There is little if any help at center on the Canadiens farm team in St. John’s as rookie Daniel Audette is now the team’s number one center and it would be a stretch to call him up and expect to play those big minutes in Montreal. The one intriguing possibly is to give an opportunity to Charles Hudon once he is healthy after the holiday break. Or, the Canadiens could continue to have Artturi Lehkonen work on his faceoffs and give him a chance to center Pacioretty and Radulov. He does have some experience playing center from his time with Frolunda in the SHL but it has been awhile since he lined up down the middle. Still, if the Canadiens are pressed for offense they could do worse than to give Lehkonen a try as his hockey skills and sense continue to shine with each passing game.

It was also confirmed that Carey Price will get the start in net against the Ducks. Now that #Staregate is over, the focus has already shifted towards Price’s next contract and what the term and dollars will be. He will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2017-2018 season. TSN Insider Bob McKenzie was on TSN690 AM radio this morning and believes that Price could be the first goaltender to break an average of $10 million USD a year. It certainly is not inconceivable that Price could make that much, be it with the Canadiens or another team. He is one of the superstars of the NHL and is widely considered to be in the top five of most everyone’s best players list in the NHL.

It is very doubtful that Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin will play hardball with Price, similarly like he did with P.K. Subban. The Canadiens need Price more than Price necessarily needs the Canadiens. Price has proved to be absolutely invaluable to the Canadiens on and off the ice. This is his team. The question is if he will accept below market value a la Steven Stamkos in order for Bergevin to be able to fill in the pieces and surround him with more talented players. If he wants to break the bank that is perfectly within his right as well.
