Detroit Red Wings Empty Detroit Red Wings

     Detroit Red Wings

Green, Marchenko out, Lashoff questionable, Jensen recalled

Defensemen are suddenly dropping like flies in the Detroit Red Wings dressing room.

Two of them are out for Monday’s game at Carolina against the Hurricanes and a third is questionable, leading to a fourth defender being recalled for the game from AHL Grand Rapids.

Alexey Marchenko, just back from a shoulder ailment, reinjured the same shoulder and Monday was placed on the seven-day injured reserve list.

Mike Green, who leads all Detroit defensemen with 7-11-18 totals in 32 games, is out with an undisclosed injury.

“Mike will not be available tonight,” said Detroit coach Jeff Blashill, who declined to go into details about Green’s physical issue.

“I can’t comment right now. We’ll know more here in the next couple of days.

“I don’t see him playing today or tomorrow and probably not on this trip.”

Green struggled to the bench late in Saturday’s 6-4 win over Anaheim after absorbing a punishing check from Ducks center Ryan Kesler, and Blashill indicated that the hit aggravated a pre-existing condition that’s been hampering Green of late.

“Yeah but it’s been an ongoing thing,” Blashill said. “We’ll just continue to evaluate.”

There’s no question that the Wings will miss Green’s presence at both ends of the ice and any long-term absence could be devastating to their hopes of getting on any sort of positive roll.

“It’s a tough, tough loss,” center Frans Nielsen said. “He does everything. He kills penalties, he quarterbacks the power play, plays tough minutes against the best guys on the other team.”

If that wasn’t enough to put the Wings on the defensive, during Monday’s morning skate, defenseman Brian Lashoff was struck in the mouth with a puck, leaving his status for the game up in the air.

“I don’t have that answer,” Blashill said. “Obviously it just happened there. It was a puck to the mouth so it was fairly severe. But we called Nick Jensen up for a reason so if Lash can’t go Jensen will be in.”

Jensen was tingling with excitement while at the same time, tempering his emotions with the possibility that he might not play.

“There’s no official word,” Jensen said. “There’s definitely some butterflies. I’ve never played at this level. I’ve played preseason but it’s not midseason. I guess there’s a little nerves but it kind of fuels you a little bit, gets you up and ready for the game, gives you energy for the game.

“I played in Grand Rapids yesterday and I got the call up. so I was preparing to play. I’m ready to go if I do get the call.”

Jensen, 26, who’s been recalled before but has never seen NHL game action, must again he ready to respond at a moment’s notice if Lashoff can’t go and his name is called.

Blashill, who coached Jensen in Grand Rapids, won’t hesitate to go with him if need be.

“Nick’s a big time competitor and an excellent skater and he uses his skating as a defensive weapon,” Blashill said. “Not that he can’t join the play but it’s a defensive weapon.

“When he’s playing his best he skates you out of zone well. He competes extremely hard. Those are the assets that he brings to the table.”
