Toronto Maple Leafs hope Tyler Bozak can return for two-game Florida swing

TORONTO — The Toronto Maple Leafs should have Tyler Bozak back in action for what will be one of the most bizarre scheduling weeks in the franchise’s 100-year history.
After the players returned from a three-day Christmas break, some such as Auston Matthews coming all the way from Arizona for Tuesday’s practice in Toronto, the team went directly to the airport for a flight to Florida and games Wednesday in Sunrise and Thursday in Tampa Bay. Then it’s home for the much anticipated New Year’s Day outdoor game against the Detroit Red Wings at BMO Field.
“The weather is definitely going to fluctuate quite a bit,” Matthews said with a laugh as forecasts call for a 30C swing between temperatures in Florida and Toronto. “It’s exciting for sure to go down there (for his first games in the Sunshine State) and the outdoor game is going to be a blast. I’ve skated outdoors, but never in a game.”
Coach Mike Babcock ran a hard practice Tuesday as well as a pre-skate gym session to get rid of any rust. But he didn’t see the break as a detriment to momentum after Toronto finally won back-to-back games before the break and got into the black in goal differential.
“As long as the guys had fun and Santa came or whatever you celebrate, that’s a positive. Now, let’s get to Florida.”

Bozak was back between James van Riemsdyk and Mitch Marner after missing the past three games, including the wins in Denver and Glendale.
“We’ll see what happens tomorrow, after the skate and make a decision,” Babcock said of Bozak’s lower body injury. “He’s available to come off IR, but at this time, I don’t know.”
Other than being “winded” at practice, Bozak said he hoped to play in Florida.
“Everything felt pretty good. It’s a lot more skating than I’ve done since I hurt it.”
Bozak, a hero in the 2014 outdoor game against the Wings at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich., doesn’t want to miss the return engagement.
“The outdoor game is the most exciting part (of this week). Everyone is talking about it more each day as it gets closer. But we have to focus on our next game. We have to keep it rolling on the road.”
The Leafs have scored 97 goals and allowed 95; a positive differential has long been one of Babcock’s measuring sticks for real improvement.
“We’ve played well without the puck and Freddy (Andersen) has been pretty good,” Babcock said. “It sets us up to have a good road trip.”

The Leafs recalled centres Frederik Gauthier, Byron Froese and goalie Antoine Bibeau on Tuesday after loaning them to the Marlies for the AHL team’s 2-1 loss to St. John’s on Boxing Day. If Bozak is good to go, Gauthier is expected to play on the fourth line with Matt Martin and Nikita Soshnikov, leaving Froese and Josh Leivo as extra forwards. No changes are expected on defence with Frank Corrado sitting again.
