G43 Oilers vs Sharks: All-Star and Backup Goaltending

     Edmonton Oilers Blogger • RSSArchiveCONTACT
This is going to be a hodge podge of thoughts tied together for the blog. Why? I don’t have time for complete ideas right now!

-Gustavsson cleared waivers which is completely expected, but the Oilers aren’t recalling Laurent Brossoit right away and nor should they. Brossoit needs to play as much hockey as he can right now. He’s sporting a below average .909 save percentage in 20 AHL games. This kid was performing at a .920 a year ago and appears to have taken a step backwards.

Not a big deal, goalies are weird. That said, I don’t think he’s the best goalie on the Condors and if the team wants to win games then maybe they should consider Ellis to play the remaining 4-6 games they have the backup scheduled for ahead of Brossoit. Ellis has appeared in half the number of games, but does have a .923 save percentage. He’s a rookie pro, but he’s stopping shots.

-When it comes to replacing Gustavsson, and they need to replace him, I’ve heard a pretty compelling argument for trading Gustavsson to Florida for Berra. Berra is currently playing in the AHL (.920 save percentage) and Gustavsson can be assigned to the AHL right away. In total the Panthers can save real dollars (vs Cap dollars) and the Oilers get an experienced backup who is better than Gustavsson. He’s a UFA at the end of the year too.

Hat tip to @akaRCN of Twitter for that

    - The All-Star team rosters are out but despite the Oilers being 2nd in the Pacific, they are sending just Connor McDavid to the All-Star game. That’s what happens when it’s your first time being relevant in a decade. McDavid will Captain the Pacific, but he isn’t strictly doing this thing by himself in Edmonton.

Leon Draisaitl is tied for 19th in NHL scoring right now. He’s been Edmonton’s 2nd best offensive player (sorry Maroon, not yet). The bigger “snub” is probably the league sending Martin Jones of the Sharks to the ASG ahead of Cam Talbot (as pointed out by Frank Seravelli). Talbot has played the most minutes of any goalie in NHL, he’s faced the most shots, and he has better numbers than Jones. Still, it’s the Sharks with 3 players in the game and the Oilers with 1.

Do I really care about the ASG? Not really, no. I’ll watch the skills competition but after that it’s not usually a good time. Edmonton needs the rest and their players will be happy with a weekend off. If the team can actually maintain relevance beyond this year then more players will be going to the games.

Puljujarvi was sent down. Slepyshev called up. Gustavsson cleared waivers and will back up Talbot tonight.

    OILERS KEYS TO THE GAME

    1) Russell Rising? I hammer on Kris Russell a lot. I do it because I see issues in his game that are disturbing to me. He has a lot of natural ability. His skating alone is something I find criminally underutilized by him, not by the coach. Probably most distressing is the way he chooses to defend the blueline, and by that I mean the way he chooses NOT to defend the blueline. Forwards tend to gain unimpeded access to the Oiler zone when facing Russell. That’s not good. However, in the last week or so he has become much more effective in terms of shot attempts. It’s a sharp upswing as the Oilers have dominated shot share against the Devils and Sens, but Russell has been a leader the last few games, not an anchor. He’s a player to watch because if he’s transitioning the puck forward he can be a positive influence.

    2) Still Burns. The name you circle when you play the Sharks is still Brent Burns. He’s big. He’s physical. He plays almost 25 minutes a night. And, he scores at almost a point per game clip. He leads the NHL in shots taken with 160 too, so if somehow you manage to keep the puck off of his stick then you are taking away a huge portion of the Sharks attack. Yeah, they have other players, but the number of giveaways Burns has (most in the NHL at 88 while 2nd has 57) tells you that he is relied upon to be a puck carrier. That’s how that stat works, the more you carry the puck, the more you give it away. I don’t know the best way to shut Burns down because it’s not like the Oilers can target him physically and punish him. They would be the ones to come away with all the bruises. Good luck with that assignment.

    3) Power vs Power. The last two games should have given Todd McLellan enough faith in his top line to run it against anyone. Versus the Devils and the Senators the trio of McDavid, Maroon, and Draisaitl were dominant. Dominant is probably not strong enough of a word. They were otherworldly. Every time they touched the puck it ended the opposition’s time in the Oiler zone and began extended shifts in the attacking zone. Every. Single. Time. Against the Devils, McDavid 5v5 was on the ice for 24 shot attempts for and 9 against. With the Sens 5v5 he was even better at 28 for and only 5 against. This line, when playing the way they did this past weekend should be frightening to any opponent. It should also open opportunities for the 2nd and 3rd lines (which they haven’t capitalized on yet).

Puck drops tonight at 7PM Moountain Time on Sportsnet West. Game On!
