After another extended layoff, the Ottawa Senators finally return to the ice to face an opponent against who things don't often go well for Sens Army.

Last time out was the first game of the four game road trip that saw them start against the Penguins before heading out to California in a voyage that didn't work out so well. It was also the last game Craig Anderson played, giving up seven goals before being pulled with about 7 minutes left on December 5th.

Mike Condon has played in every game since, starting 12 and coming in to relieve an injured Andrew Hammond in the other. Condon will get the start again tonight, having stopped every shot he has faced against the Pens this season (a whopping 2!).

While the Senators have been off for three days and have played just two games in the last 11 days, the Penguins are coming in angry after dropping a 5-2 decision against the Capitals Wednesday night. In addition to the loss, they also had to sit and watch Alex Ovechkin notch his 1,000th point, a goal 35 seconds into the game, and then added his 1,001st later on on his patented one-timer from the top of the circle.

As a side note, Sidney Crosby is 17 points behind his rival, having played almost 140 fewer games due to his injury problems. You can bet Crosby isn't happy that his foil made it to 1,000 before him, and given the Senators penchant for giving up milestones, he just might get to it tonight.

The Senators are in the midst of a tough January schedule that will see them face the Maple Leafs and Blue Jackets twice each, as well as the Captials again for the third time this month and the Blues in their next six games. Wins certainly won't be easy to come by, but the good thing is that despite their inactivity, they are still holding the third spot in the Atlantic Division and have as many as five games in hand on some of their nearby rivals (except Toronto who they are even in games played with right now).

They need to find a way to get more consistent scoring, and that begins with getting Bobby Ryan contributing to a consistent level. The Mark Stone line has done a bulk of the scoring, with Mike Hoffman chipping in on occasion. Ryan had a five game point streak before Christmas, when they were playing well. He has now gone five games without a point and that doesn't include the game he missed as a mysterious healthy scratch, and in that stretch the record of the team hasn't been great.

Erik Karlsson is also pointless in four games, the first time this season he has gone more than two games without a point.

On the plus side, after getting just two points in his first 34 games, Cody Ceci has 3 points in his last 5 games, including a solid two assist effort in Sunday's win over the Oilers.

At least the Senators will have a more consistent schedule before the all-star break, with just one 2 day break aside from which they play every other day with no back to backs. Hopefully the consistency combined with the rest they have had over the last couple of weeks will get them going in the right direction and they can maintain or improve their standing heading into the break, starting tonight at home against a powerful but possibly a tired Penguins team.
