The expansion Vegas Golden Knights have filled out their front office, from general manager George McPhee through the team’s communications staff. The next order of business is finding the team’s first head coach, and that business could be completed sooner than expected.
“At this point, I’d say it’s 50-50 we have our head coach in place before the season’s over,” owner Bill Foley told the Las Vegas Journal-Review.

Beat writer Steve Carp believes this new timetable – the Knights were expected to hire a coach in late spring, or possibly after the expansion draft – is related to the availability of Gerrard Gallant, the former Florida Panthers head coach. The New York Islanders reached out to the Panthers to talk with Gallant while considering Jack Capuano’s fate. He was fired four games ago, with Doug Weight taking over on an interim basis (and doing rather well).
McPhee never hired a coach with NHL experience while GM of the Washington Capitals, but there were a variety of behind-the-scenes reasons for that. He told us last year that Vegas would weigh experience in selecting its first coach.
“In many positions, you’re better the second time around. We value experience. We just don’t know where this is going to end up. If there’s a terrific up and comer, he’ll certainly be a candidate. But in most of the hiring we’ve done here, it’s been experienced people,” he said.
Gallant makes total sense for the expansion Knights: He’s 53, he has two NHL coaching gigs under his belt (the second much more successful than the first), he’s highly respected around the NHL and he was a playing day contemporary of Murray Craven, the Wormtongue to Foley’s King Theoden of Rohan.

The only question we’d raise is one of structure. He’s a players’ coach, but not exactly counted among the league’s top tacticians. With an expansion team that both Foley and the NHL want to win ASAP, you typically want a systems guy behind that bench. Think Jacques Lemaire, for a recent example of early expansion success.

That’s why we’ve long been entranced with the idea of Ken Hitchcock leaving for Las Vegas after his “final” season with the St. Louis Blues. Or even finding a way for World Cup of Hockey darling Ralph Krueger to give up his soccer gig and return to the NHL as Vegas coach. Guys who bring structure and identity to a team immediately.
This isn’t to say Gallant isn’t a solid choice, because he would be one. Especially if the Knights end up as loaded as we believe they could be thanks to the expansion draft rigged in their favor.
