In this edition of the hotstove, we share our picks for the most overused defenseman in the NHL.

    Todd Cordell

I'm going to avoid the obvious (Dan Girardi, Andrew MacDonald, etc.) and go with Cody Ceci.

The guy is averaging 23:32 per game and I'm not really sure what he brings to the table. At 5v5, he has five points in 46 games. Of 75 defenseman who have logged at least 750 minutes at 5v5, only Tobias Enstrom, Kevin Bieksa and Ben Lovejoy have tallied fewer points.

In terms of possession, the Senators control 45.8% of the 5v5 shot attempts (worst among regular defensemen) on the team as opposed to ~49% without him.

If straight up results are your cup of tea, he doesn't fare well there either. At 5v5 the Senators score almost 54% of the goals without him on the ice. That number drops to 44.8% when he's out there.

I know the Senators don't have a ton of internal options, but a guy who doesn't produce, drive possession and has a negative impact on goals shouldn't be playing this much.

    Adam French

Every other year I would say Jack Johnson with absolutely zero hesitation. He is the poster boy for the idea that just because a player is physically ABLE to play 26 minutes a night, they need to have the SKILL to do so. Which he simply does not. However, Torts has him on the leash and Johnson is having his best season to date because of it. Similar to Dion Phaneuf playing better in the 20-21 minute range over 25-26.

So I will go with Ron Hainsey. Yes he's still in the NHL. I'm almost as surprised as you. At 35 Hainsey is at the end of his career, a career kept on life support through the sheer luck of playing on a team with an awful defense. The Hurricanes' defense this year though is slowly improving as Faulk/Slavin/Hanifin and Pesce grow together. Hainsey however plays almost 23 minutes a night and is third on the team overall in ice-time. He plays 19 minutes of even strength a night and is not fairing well. That puts him at number 21 for average 5vs5 ice-time for defensemen. Hainsey shouldn't be in that category. For a "shutdown defenseman" he sees an awful lot of offensive zone starts.

I think he is played too much and that the sooner they promote Hanifin and Pesce into those minutes, the sooner the Canes can turn a corner.
