After yet another third-period meltdown and loss on Tuesday in Anaheim, the Avalanche finish their two-game road trip Wednesday in Los Angeles.

    Here are the GAME NOTES.

A 5-1 loss to the Ducks, who scored three third-period goals, extended the Avalanche's losing streak to a season-worst eight games (0-7-1). They've had three five-game losing streaks -- 0-5-0 twice and 0-4-1 once. They are 4-23-2 since a 3-2 win in Columbus on Nov. 21 moved them to 9-9-0 for the season.

The Avalanche also are 0-5-1 in the past six road games since a 2-1 road win in Chicago, of all places, on Dec. 23.

    They went 1-9-1 in January.

“Like every other game, we don’t really score much and (Anaheim) is one of the best defensive teams," center Nathan MacKinnon, the Avalanche's lone NHL All-Star representative, told the Denver Post. "Just par for the course. It’s obviously tough to find positives.”

The Avalanche power play continues to be completely inept. They went 0-for-3 in the first period, 0-for-4 for the game, and are 6-for-65 in the past 20 games; they're 2-17-1 in this stretch.

Rookie Mikko Rantanen scored the lone goal on a breakaway in the second period, his eighth goal of the season and second in two games following an eight-game slump.

Calvin Pickard made 26 saves and has lost eight of his past nine games while allowing 32 goals. The Avalanche play so poorly that it doesn't really matter who's in goal, but rookie Spencer Martin might get the call against the Kings.

“I thought we were the better team in the first (period) and earned some of those power-play chances,” coach Jared Bednar told reporters. “Unfortunately, we didn’t capitalize on them and they were the better team in the second period, no question about it.

"We got a little loose defensively. In the third period it turns into run-and-gun, and that’s not really going to turn out well for us against a team like that.”

    Or against any team, really.

Defenseman Tyson Barrie and forward Rene Bourque returned from lower-body injuries. Barrie was paired with Francois Beauchemin, while Bourque played left wing with Joe Colborne and Blake Comeau.

Defenseman Fedor Tyutin (groin injury) and center John Mitchell were scratched.

Jakob Silfverberg scored twice for the Ducks, who got 28 saves from John Gibson.

    Possible Avalanche lineup:

    FORWARDS
Mikhail Grigorenko -- Nathan MacKinnon -- Mikko Rantenan
Gabriel Landeskog -- Matt Duchene -- Matt Nieto
Rene Bourque -- Carl Soderberg -- Blake Comeau
Andreas Martinsen -- Joe Colborne -- Jarome Iginla

    DEFENSE
    Francois Beauchemin -- Tyson Barrie
    Patrick Wiercioch -- Nikita Zadorov
    Eric Gelinas -- Cody Goloubef

    GOALIES
    Spencer Martin
    Calvin Pickard
