Exiting the NHL All-Star break, Lindy Ruff's Dallas Stars (20-20-10) look to pull above the .500 mark as they take on Mike Babcock's Toronto Maple Leafs (23-15-9) on Tuesday night. Game time at the American Airlines Center is 7:30 p.m. CT. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Southwest.

This is the first of two games this season between the inter-conference clubs. Last season, the Stars lost both meetings with Toronto in regulation. The Leafs have swept each of the last two season series against Dallas, dating back to the 2014-15 season.

The Stars are currently three points behind the present wildcard holders in the Western Conference but are in a logjam of six teams -- all separated by no more than three points -- who are battling to get into playoff position. For now, all Dallas can do is take care of its own business and see where it leads them before worrying about the four teams (St. Louis, Calgary, Los Angeles and Vancouver) currently ahead of them in the standings or the Winnipeg Jets (with whom the Stars are tied with 50 points but have played two more games than Dallas).

Dallas brings a 13-7-6 home record into Tuesday's tilt, while the significantly improved Maple Leafs are currently 11-7-6 on the road. The Stars must start playing better in their remaining inter-conference games, as Dallas is just 4-8-4 against Eastern Conference clubs. Additionally, the Stars must begin to pick up more points out of overtime and shootout games. Dallas is just 2-10 in games decided past regulation.

Another vitally needed area of improvement: penalty killing. Dallas exits the All-Star break ranked dead last (30th) in penalty killing efficiency at a dismal 74 percent. The PK was atrocious through most of January, and Dallas enters this game having yielded an unacceptable 17 opposition power play goals over the last 13 games.

In their final game before the break, Kari Lehtonen entered the game in relief of Antti Niemi and the Stars rallied back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Buffalo Sabres, 4-3. Veteran forward Patrick Sharp notched a pair of goals. Prior to that game, Dallas had won just one of its previous six.

On the injury front for Dallas, Radek Faksa (lower body) is likely to be able to return to the lineup after missed the two games leading into the All-Star break. Still out are defensemen Johnny Oduya (lower body) and Jamie Oleksiak (hand) as well as forwards Mattias Janmark (preseason knee surgery) and Ales Hemsky (hip surgery).

The Maple Leafs are coming off a narrow 2-1 regulation road defeated to the Philadelphia Flyers in a game that was tied 1-1 until late in the third period. Overall, though, the Maple Leafs have claimed points in 13 of their last 16 games (11-3-2). The loss in Philly, coupled with a Boston Bruins win, at least temporarily knocked the Leafs out of third place (an automatic playoff spot) in the Atlantic Division and below lower wildcard seed Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference playoff race. However, Toronto holds three games in hand on the Flyers and five on the Bruins.

On the injury front, defenseman Morgan Rielly (knee) is listed as questionable for Tuesday's game and will be a game-day decision after the morning skate.
