For the second time this season, the Boston Bruins rolled into D.C. riding the high of a three-game winning streak, and for the second time this season, the Bruins left the Verizon Center with their winning streak snapped by Braden Holtby the Washington Capitals, this time by a 5-3 final.

Predictably, at least when we’re talking about a Bruins-Capitals played in Washington’s barn, the Caps struck early and often, the first behind a TJ Oshie breakaway goal less than four minutes into the game, and then with a Nicklas Backstrom putaway off a massive rebound late in the period.

The Bruins found a way to escape the first down by just one, though, thanks to winger Brad Marchand’s power-play snipe on Holtby with just 1:14 left in the first period. In what’s become a theme of sorts during their recent hot streak, the Bruins recognized the deepening hole and actually did something about it before it ballooned out of reach.

Marchand and the B’s then carried that momentum into the second period, too, as No. 63 struck for yet another power-play goal and just a few minutes into the second for his 23rd goal of the season and his third multi-goal night in the last four games (Marchand had two assists in the other game).

Drawn back even, the Bruins struggled to get that extra push they had in prior games, and the second half of the second period was just really watching and waiting for the other shoe to drop. With the Black and Gold almost impossibly pinned in their own zone for prolonged stretches, a late period power play was the match that Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin needed, as he pummeled a puck through B’s goalie Tuukka Rask with just 14 seconds left in the period to give the Caps a 3-2 lead.

Things went from bad to worse for the B’s in the third period, as Brett Connolly scored the Caps’ fourth goal of the night early in the third, and Evgeny Kuznetsov potted the fifth Washington goal, which was more than enough to make David Krejci’s late-game goal be anything more than a box score padder, as the Capitals wrecked the Bruins with five goals on just 22 shots against Rask.

With the loss, Rask dropped to 0-6-4 with an .882 save percentage at the Verizon Center in his career. It’s one of three NHL buildings he’s yet to win in his NHL career, and the only one in the East.

    This and that

    - The obvious talking point in this one is the health of Patrice Bergeron. Injured in the third period when a Matt Niskanen slapshot blasted off the inside of his knee, Bergeron hobbled down the runway, returned for a couple of shifts later in the game, and then disappeared back down the tunnel. Bergeron is not having the best of years offensively (he has 12 goals and 26 points in 51 games), but the team undoubtedly feels it when he’s out of action, as even the subtle things Bergeron does get exposed as vital missing ingredients for the Black and Gold. The Bruins will provide an update on No. 37, who missed the first three games of this season thanks to a lower-body injury, on Thursday.

As I wrote on WEEI.com, Rask’s game was pretty ugly. He looked like a tired goaltender. It’d be nice for the Bruins to find him a game off here and there. I just don’t think they can afford it. Tough times.

    - The Capitals have one of the worst goal songs in all of hockey. I think it goes Canadiens, then the Caps, and then the Lightning (belongs in a soccer stadium). Best goal song in the NHL: the Devils for playing Gaslight Anthem, but the Dallas Stars get an honorable mention for “Puck Off” by Pantera.

    - Ex-Bruin forward Brett Connolly scored his ninth goal of the season for the Capitals on Wednesday. It’s the same total he had in 71 games for the B’s last season. Connolly, who was not even tendered a contract by the Bruins, could have been a nice bottom-six option for the Bruins this season. The Bruins have a combined eight goals from Austin Czarnik, Jimmy Hayes, Noel Acciari, and Anton Blidh, four of the most commonly deployed fourth-line right wingers this season.

    - Jarome Iginla wants out of Colorado. He is a shell of what he was for the Bruins three years ago, and the Avalanche are going to want a lot, but I’m curious if the Bruins make a call if and when their bids on a guy like Matt Duchene or Gabriel Landeskog fall short. One problem: Bruins are pretty much set on the right side of their top six between David Backes and David Pastrnak, so that would require paying a hefty ransom for a guy that you’re going to put on your third line and/or moving Backes to the third line. Not sure either one of those is all that appealing to the Bruins.

    Up next

The Bruins will have Thursday off before they return to the practice rink Friday at Warrior Ice Arena. The club is back in game action Saturday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs at TD Garden.
