    Calgary Flames Empty Calgary Flames

    1) The Calgary Flames may no longer be on vacation but it would seem they left their talents behind on the way home.

Following a five-day break, the Flames returned to action last night with a chance to reclaim a playoff spot.

How did they respond in such an important game? Losing by five, at home, to the NHL's 29th seeded team, one that entered last night's contest with six road wins in 25 tries.

It's one thing to lose a pivotal game against a bad team like the Coyotes. It's another to be blown out and embarrassed.

These are the kinds of losses the team will look back on in disgust if they end up missing the playoffs by a couple points.

    2) Based on past performance, it seemed like the additions of Brian Elliott and Chad Johnson would have no problem solidifying the goaltending. If not anything else, at least one of them should have been able to give the Flames quality starts at any given time. Yet, here we are in February and that duo has stopped just .900% of the shots they've faced this season. In other words, the goaltending has been slightly better than the disaster that was last season. Maybe neither guy is the answer, but perhaps there's more to a plethora of goaltenders posting disastrous numbers behind this team.

    3) Glen Gulutzan has done some good things for the Flames this season. He has also made weird lineup decisions constantly and that trend continued last night against Arizona.

Dennis Wideman, who was walked several times and continues to be burnt by anyone who can skate, led the team in even-strength ice time despite countless mistakes. Meanwhile, Johnny Gaudreau, the team's best player, was put on the 4th line because he made one mistake.

The great thing about all of this is Wideman has no future on the team and his mistakes continuously lead to goals against. Gaudreau basically is the Calgary Flames, and yet he gets punished for his mistake. Makes sense, doesn't it?

And another thing: high-end players who have the puck on their sticks a lot turn the puck over.

Brent Burns, Erik Karlsson, John Carlson, and Dustin Byfuglien lead defensemen in turnovers while John Tavares, Joe Pavelski, Logan Couture, and Gaudreau are at the top for forwards. I haven't seen any of those guys benched for trying to make a play in the neutral zone.

    4) Wideman is not a top-4 defenseman nor a part of the future. We know that. Why not try Brett Kulak in that spot? I don't think he would do any worse and even if he did at least the team would know what it has in Kulak. Slotting him into the top-4 would also allow Brodie to move back to his off-side, where he seems to play better.

"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." - Albert Einstein.

    5) Though the points still aren't there, I think Sam Bennett has played better of late. He has at least two shots in three straight games and the Flames have out-attempted their opponents 56-31 (64.36CF%) over the last four games with Bennett on the ice at full-strength. If the Flames continue to outplay their opponents with him on the ice the points will come.
