Which Habs player stands to benefit the most from Julien's arrival?

The anticipation for the Montreal Canadiens practice today at 4pm is nearly palpable. RDS will be airing it live, just like they did when former Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey stepped behind the bench when he let go of Claude Julien in his first go around in Montreal. Even TSN 690 will be broadcasting live from Brossard, a rarity for it’s Afternoon Drive show. Everyone wants to see what Julien’s lines will look like, to get a glimpse into his vision of the Canadiens current roster.

Will Phillip Danault keep his spot on the top line in between Max Pacioretty and Alexander Radulov or will Alex Galchenyuk finally make his return to the first line? Is David Desharnais going to get a final opportunity to demonstrate that he still has hockey in him? To the dismay of many, Michael McCarron has not been recalled from the St. John’s Ice Caps… Perhaps the defense pairs will be mixed and matched. In all likelihood though, Julien is not going to completely rock the boat and shakeup the lineup from top to down. Julien is already quite familiar with the Canadiens players, having faced them numerous times as Atlantic division rivals while with the Bruins. He will have his own ideas based on what he’s observed in the past but Julien will certainly lean on his assistant coaches as to what they felt was working or not.

So who stands to benefit from the coaching change? Today, there are likely 22 players in Brossard who believe that they can improve under their new head coach. Galchenyuk is the early frontrunner based on his decreased ice time and slump since returning from injury. Before suffering his knee injury in early December, Galchenyuk was the Canadiens leading scorer and most consistent forward. Coming off of the bye week should be the perfect time for him to return to the game energized and ready to work.

Other candidates? I think that Julien could very well be just what the doctor ordered for Andrew Shaw. His play has been wildly inconsistent this season. He has had tremendous difficulties balancing that fine line of playing with an edge. Offensively Shaw has struggled as well since returning from his concussion. Julien has plenty of experience working with Bruins players, past and present who play Shaw’s style. Scott Thornton, Milan Lucic and Brad Marchand were/are all players that Canadiens love to hate but Julien helped shape their successful NHL careers. Now is the perfect time for Shaw to step up.

Julien’s arrival could also be a blessing in disguise for Tomas Plekanec. He was just a rookie in Julien’s last season with the Canadiens in 2005-2006 so the two are somewhat familiar with one another but keep in mind that was over ten years ago. However, Julien is well aware of how Plekanec has held his Boston top lines at bay over the years. Plekanec’s struggles since the second half of the 2015-2016 have been well documented. He has been a shell of his former self. It is not unreasonable to believe that he also stands to benefit from a fresh voice.

Brendan Gallagher is another forward who has been struggling this year. His goalless droughts before his hand injury were worrisome to say the least, especially since it appeared as though Gallagher had gotten away from playing his game, from doing the things that have made him so successful from when he first entered the league in 2013. Gallagher is the type of player that is right up Julien’s ally. Expect a much stronger finish to the season from him.

On the back end, Nathan Beaulieu is the obvious choice as one who could see his role and playing time increase under Julien. Beaulieu’s potential has never been in question. His difficulties have always been about making mental mistakes and inconsistent play. Will Julien be the one to finally break through to the young rearguard and get him over the hump so as to consistently stay in the top four? Will he get another chance at becoming Shea Weber’s partner?

Shea Weber is another veteran who stands to benefit from the arrival of Julien. The two are familiar with one another and have had shared success from winning gold at the 2014 Winter Olympics and 2016 World Cup of Hockey. Julien knows what Weber can bring to the rink. Before the bye week, Weber looked almost disinterested on the ice. The aggressiveness, that look that says “don’t even think about it” was gone from his eyes. I am looking for Julien to bring back that drive to Weber’s game.

Finally, the hiring of Julien is all for naught if Carey Price does not rediscover game. Obviously that is for Stephane Waite and Price to work on. However, Price needs help from his teammates and that is where Julien comes in. Price needs improved communication. He needs his teammates to stand up for him. He needs his teammates to be able to sacrifice themselves and give it their all. He needs the Canadiens to start playing like a team, playing for one another, playing for the CH on their jersey. That is where Julien will be able to help his star goaltender.

Practice starts at 4pm today and the Canadiens host the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday at 2pm.
    Stay tuned!
