Coyotes Trade Michael Stone for Pretty Much Nothing

The Coyotes traded Michael Stone to the Flames for a third-round pick. It's not a very good return on a right-shooting former 36 point defenseman.

Then again, they used a third round pick to select him back in 2008, got to use him for eight years and then sell him for the same thing they paid for him. If you could Michael Stone a car, that'd be awesome. A hockey player doesn't work that way, though, I guess because it's a person.

Stone shows that advanced stats and recency bias play a very big role in the NHL trade market. A 26 year-old right shooting, 36 point defenseman who hits, blocks shots and has a big point blast should be worth more than a third-round pick.

But he's injury prone. This year he's been awful. His 36 points were balanced out with some pretty unspectacular 5v5 stats. So that's what he's worth. Is the difference between Stone and Adam Larsson the difference between a third round pick and Taylor Hall? It is not, and that is why the Coyotes should have made this trade with Edmonton. They could have got Puljujarvi.

But this is a bad trade, not really because of the trade it self, but because Stone had such high potential. It isn't a bad trade because they'll miss Michael Stone - they won't. (Well maybe they'll miss him as a person. He might really be a great guy. I don't know. I have never met him. I don't have any clue what he thinks about Lord of the Rings. )

But Michael Stone the player? They probably won't actually miss him. The third round pick is probably a good deal.

I'll let Todd C tell you why:

Stone's season has been an absolute disaster. He's producing at a 16 point pace over 82 games, the lowest of his NHL career, and his underlying numbers are scary -- and not in a good way. At 5v5, the Coyotes controlled 42.3% of the shot attempts, 38.9% of the scoring chances and 34.5% of the high-danger chances with Stone on the ice. He ranks last among Coyotes' defensemen in all three categories. The Coyotes have been terrible this season and it's been in part because of Stone's poor play. Perhaps a change of scenery, or a change in usage, will help him out but I'm not optimistic he'll be able to flip the switch and turn into a top-4 defenseman. If we're looking at this season alone, his play doesn't even warrant a roster spot.

Thanks for doing most of my job for me Toddster. I owe you one very hot hot stove take.

The reason it's a sad day though, is it's a day of lost potential.

It seems like just yesterday that the Coyotes were stacked for the future on Defense. OEL, Stone, Murphy and Gormley. It was going to be amazing.

What it is, is a cautionary tale in prospect porn. The rise in the internet and the centralization of talent to the big money, big market teams has meant that we fans just can't get enough of our prospects.

Want proof? Just go ahead and write a blog suggesting you trade a first rounder. It's like people think they're all going to be McDavids.

And to a lesser extent, we do that with prospects. Michael Stone was a hitting, shooting machine. He was the next Dion Phaneuf. But he wasn't the Calgary Phaneuf, he was the Ottawa Phaneuf.

While his shot is a great power-play weapon, he is the classic overrated big play dman. The Problem is that we know subtle low-impact guys are almost always more effective.

Murphy is garbage (Though interestingly our Grandmothers used to be best friends, apparently). Stone is terrible and Gormley, somewhere he's out there saying he never got a fair shake.

At least Ekman-Larsson is the real deal. And maybe it'll work out with DeAngleo and Chychrun. Who knows? No sure things in the NHL, as I'm sure Luke Schenn thought about when he saw his younger self traded to the Flames.

(Note: turns out Schenn is only a year older. Still, the similarities are interesting there).

Anyways, this is some pretty bad mismanagement. Had Stone been moved earlier, he certainly would have brought more than a lousy third round pick.

    Such is life.[/size]
