Kuwait's Court of Cassation has upheld five years in jail for five people, including three members of the ruling al-Sabah family, for insulting senior judges via electronic social media.
The judgments of the Court of Cassation are categorical and irrevocable, and those sentenced by the ruling family are Shaikh al-Fahd al-Sabah, nephew of the prince and former head of the State Security Service, the younger brother of the executive committee of the International Federation of Football, Sheikh Ahmed al-Fahd al-Ahmad al-Sabah, Al-Watan newspaper and its affiliated channel, which were closed due to violating the financial conditions of the Companies Law.
The Court also upheld a one-year prison term for a sixth person, as well as a decision to release another six persons on the same case.
The defendants were convicted at the end of May of 2016 for insulting the president of the Supreme Judicial Council and his predecessor, and accusing them of receiving bribes through Twitter and social networking and the application of Watsab for instant chat via smart phones.
A first-instance court sentenced him to 10 years in prison for another case and was accused of publishing tweets and messages, but left Kuwait and did not appeal.
The Kuwaiti authorities have arrested and arrested dozens of people for comments made through social media, especially Twitter.
Earlier this year, Amnesty International criticized the new cybercrime law in Kuwait, saying it "restricts freedom of expression" online.
