Coyotes Must At Least Consider Trading Ekman-Larsson

Coyotes GM John Chayka must ask himself one very tough question:

Realistically, can I give this team a shot at the Playoffs this year, and a shot at the Cup next year?

If the answer isn't yes, then he needs to try and sign Oliver Ekman-Larsson to a contract extension.

I hope he already has started those negotiations, because I don't see how he can possibly know which direction to move the team (start trying to win now, or be patient) if he doesn't know the answer.

It's pretty simple, if Oliver Ekman-Larsson isn't agreeable to extending his contract right now, he has to be traded. (Note it was pointed out to me that you can't re-sign somebody until 13 months before contract is set to expire, however you can definitely ask him and see how he feels.)

If you consider how the Eric Lindros trade effected the Nordiques, it might be worth trading him now. Two years at 5.5 for a player who is - at worst - the fourth best defenseman in the NHL after Karlsson, Burns and Hedman. He should be worth an absolute tonne.

The Coyotes will never get more for him than when he has two full years on his contract at a rate that pays him Zaitsev money. Arguably, considering age, contract and skill-level, OEL might be the most valuable trade commodity in the entire league.

And if won't re-sign today, he should be traded tomorrow.

What direction the Coyotes take from here is entirely dependent on if he'll sign. If you have him long-term, you may be content with one more bad year and another high-end player. If are you unsure, you start making moves to try and keep him, or be competitive now. I don't know how that works out.

With some win-now trades, the Coyotes have the assets and cap space to a good team. Their young talent - Domi, Strome, Keller, Duclair, Perlini, - is quite impressive. But I still remember when Stone/Murphy/Gormley was one of the best young trios in the NHL.

Sometimes you prospects are Chris Carpenter, Roy Halliday and Kelvin Escobar. Other times they're Lonny Bohonos, Jeff Ware and Kent Manderville. Who knows what the Coyotes actually have?

The only certainty is that if they moved OEL they'd get back two, maybe even three blue-chip prospects and some draft picks. If he won't resign, you have to move him before that bounty becomes a rental price.
