There's been a lot of talk one of the Chicago Blackhawks' core players could be traded within the next couple weeks.

Many speculated Brent Seabrook would be the guy moved -- his perceived value still seems to be relatively high despite a huge contract and deteriorating play -- but that doesn't appear likely. Another defenseman, Niklas Hjalmarsson, looks like he could be the odd man out.

Darren Dreger recently offered some insight on the subject during a radio spot with TSN 1050 (transcription via MapleLeafsHotstove).

As strange as it sounds, I feel like Hjalmarsson is the more likely [to be traded] of the two [Seabrook or Hjalmarsson] and there are some that believe that maybe that process is already underway in that he has submitted his list of teams he would be willing to waive to.

Hjalmarsson is definitely a player who should be of interest to the Flames.

The term defensive defenseman gets thrown around a lot and, in many cases, players labeled as such aren't very good (Deryk Engelland, Roman Polak, Dan Girardi, etc. come to mind). Hjalmarsson is not one of those cases. He is one of the league's best in terms of shot suppression and would be a huge boost to the Flames' back end.

A top four defense of Mark Giordano, Dougie Hamilton, T.J. Brodie and Hjalmarsson would be rivaled only by a team like Nashville and get the Flames one step closer to truly contending.

There's no guarantee he is traded, nor a guarantee the Flames can land him -- there would undoubtedly be a lot of interest and the price wouldn't be cheap -- but if he's available, the Flames should be calling.
