We end our postseason report cards with John Tavares. The captain did not have one of his better seasons this year. His MO during his career is a slow first half and comes on strong during the second half. This season was not any different. JT scored five goals in the first 20 games and finished with 11 at the end of 2016. The Islanders were the bottom of the standings.

Once the calendar changed to 2017, Tavares heated up, as did the Islanders. The 2009 first overall pick was almost a point per game player 17 goals, 22 assists) for the final 41 games of the season.

When Casey Cizikas first went down with injury this past season, Tavares filled in nicely on the penalty kill. It was the first time during his eight-year career that Tavares took a regular shift with the PK unit. His play on the PK also influenced his play defensively.

The captain's play in overtime was very hit and miss. He did score two game-winning goals during the extra frame but his extended shifts led to odd-man rushes and eventual losses. His frustrations throughout the season led Tavares into taking careless penalty.

This was the first season since 2013-14 that Tavares did not led the team in goals. Anders Lee's first 30-goal season led the team.

Tavares reached a few milestones this season as he recorded his 500th career point against the Florida Panthers back in January. He finished the season in the Islanders all-time top ten in goals, assists, and points.

Whether the captain moves up those lists is still up in the air. Tavares has one year left on one of the league's best deals (6 years, $33M). He is open to signing a new contract with the only team he has played for but is willing to wait and see how general manager Garth Snow improves the team. The next two weeks will provide clarity on the situation.

    2016-17 final grade: B

There is a lot of speculation that the Islanders and Las Vegas have a deal in place that will send the 15th overall pick in Friday's draft to Vegas so they will not select one of the more prevalent unprotected forwards like Ryan Strome or Brock Nelson. There is also a third part of the deal where Snow will send his mentor George McPhee a big contract. A few names came out last night including Nikolay Kulemin, Mikhail Grabovski and Casey Cizikas. We will find out by Thursday.
