Documentaries scandal overthrows Japanese defense minister

Japanese Defense Minister Tomomi Inada said on Friday that she had resigned after a media scandal that defense officials had tried to hide documents about Japanese peacekeepers being jeopardized by the deteriorating security situation in southern Sudan.

"In this regard, because of my position as secretary of defense, I have decided to resign. The resignation request was submitted today to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and approved. "

Earlier, the Japan Broadcasting Corporation (JTV) announced that Defense Minister Tomomi Inada would resign after a series of errors and suspicions of covering up an incident critics said contributed to the declining popularity of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Inada began an investigation into media reports in March that defense officials were trying to hide records of a worsening security situation in southern Sudan where Japanese troops are involved in a UN-led peacekeeping operation.

Enada denied reports that she was directly involved in covering up the matter.
