MOSCOW (Reuters) - Chechen leader Othmayev, accused by Moscow of plotting to assassinate Russian President Vladimir Putin, survived an armed attack near the Ukrainian capital of Kiev, his wife was killed, Interior Ministry adviser Anton Hershchenko said on Tuesday.

"Othmayev was injured but he was alive after his car was shot," he said, adding that his wife, Amina Ekiyeva, was killed in the attack near the village of Halifa in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev.

The Russian authorities accused Othmayev in 2012 to participate in the scheme of militants aimed at the assassination of President Putin.

Russian media reported that the militants were planning to plant mines on the Kutuzvsky road in Moscow, where Putin's convoy passes on a daily basis.

Othmaneyev survived an assassination attempt last June after his wife confronted the attacker and shot him. Uthmaev and his wife are popular in Ukraine after volunteering with Ukrainian troops in their battles against Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, which occurred a week after a parliament member was injured in a bomb attack on his car in the capital, Kiev.
