The European Union has promised to receive more than 34,400 refugees directly from African countries and Middle East countries, especially Libya, the European Commission said on Monday, following sharp criticism from the United Nations.
"So far, we have received more than 34,400 commitments from 16 member countries," the commission said Thursday, presenting its immigration policy in 2015 to tackle the growing number of migrants arriving in Europe.
"We are slowly stepping out of the crisis and are now managing migration in a spirit of partnership and shared responsibility," said Immigration Commissioner Demetris Avramopoulos, adding that the principle of "resettlement" should be "the preferred solution to protect the most vulnerable."
